This photograph was taken on a plane leaving California. Investigation can take us places. Looking out of a plane window can be so fascinating. You can explore the world below in the sky. Investigation is a trip of discovery. The more you look, the more you will find.

The photo was taken in my dad's auto shop. The '73 Dodge Challenger from the time of this photo taken, to now, is a mystery. As it is a project car, we observe it closely as I go with restoring it, and discover something new about it.

This photo was taken while I was walking out of Party City. This photo relates to the theme "investigation" by how this picture just looks like the sunset. I was just walking when I look up and see this beautiful sunset.

My sister and I were in Mindo, a forest in Ecuador full of amazing and unique plants and species. Suddenly, it started raining. While we were exploring, we found some beautiful trees. We decided to use the trees as a background to shoot the rose and other flowers because the trees made the colors of the roses stand out. This picture symbolizes the beauty of Ecuadorian Roses and emphasizes the exploration of nature. A magical place that will surprise you every time you investigate.

The investigation of nature, specially the flora, lead us to the conclusion that roses are one the the most beautiful plants found all over the word. As a fact it is known that the most beautiful roses come from South America specially from Ecuador. Ecuador also offers the largest selection of rose varieties, about 500 varieties, in the most amazing colors, from natural colored roses like red, white, pink, light pink and lavender to exotic tinted roses like the black roses and rainbow roses. These roses are considered the best of the world, mainly due to a supreme advantage in rose buds or blooms. Also another big advantage is their stem size. Roses that are grown in Ecuador are by far superior to other roses, thanks to the growing conditions that are at the Equator (the middle of the world). These roses are so strong that they will remain fresh for a longer time compared to roses from other countries.

Finally the investigation of the nature and research, make the picture presented a representation of the one of the most meaningful and beautiful plants all over the world .

Investigating is searching for answers to things like who, what, when, where, why, and how. To investigate you need the correct tools. Tools like books, the internet, magnifying glass, and many other tools can help with investigations. This image is a representation of investigation because it shows how a magnifying glass is being used to investigate and get a closer look at the handprints.
Honorable Mention
Microscopes are used to investigate different materials that the human eye cannot see. I took this photo of my brother Nickolas investigating the differences between a dog hair and a human hair. To do this, he put the two different hairs on separate slides. He was able to find that there were differences such as air pockets and different colored lines to determine what kind of hair it was. One of the greatest tools for investigations is the microscope. People like doctors, crime scene workers, scientist, and even my brother can use them to perform their own investigations.

Over winter break, my family and I went to Disneyland California Adventure to celebrate my step-father's birthday. As we walked through the park I noticed how my sisters enjoyed being with their dad. I asked my mom to loan me her phone to capture a nice moment. I decided to take this candid photo of them walking together. As they walked they were enjoying all the cool sights. Even though we have been there many times before, my sisters always get excited as if it was their first time being there. The palm trees and buildings made this a cool photo. Reminds me of Hollywood.

This photo represents the love a father has for his children.

I was walking around and looking around when I realized that I was walking on a good place to take a photo. When I took the picture I took many attempts trying to figure out how to take the bridge. And then finally got this picture and thought it was fantastic. This made me realize that you can always learn from something you didn't expect you could learn from or learn about. I also used Photoshop to give it a dusk like look.
Honorable Mention
This photo captures investigation by this young girl in her own little bubble. This young girl is reading, investigating this book. She is opening her mind to a whole new world to her imagination. Investigation plays a big role in this photo. Where she is investigating her book meaning she is opening up her mind digging deeper into her book. She is investigating through the pages figuring out what each word means, what each page is building up to. The bubble represents her own mind where she is sitting comfortably, but when that bubble pops that means it is time for her to come back to reality and investigate what's around her.

Sometimes we forget to stop and break the pattern we follow every single day. Sometimes we forget to stop and investigate our surroundings to see the hidden beauty of our everyday lives.

My family hikes most weekends and every time we explore a new place. We have visited many famous places around the city. My brother is always the trailblazer and runs to the top of the hill if that means he is in first. Even though it is winter, we still wear shorts due to the hot weather that exists in California. My mom is always planning new hikes for us to go on even when we are exhausted and unwilling to go on hikes. I took this photo because my brother is investigating the trail to make sure that there is no wildlife such as snakes or bobcats.
Honorable Mention
I was at school admiring the leaves and decided to take a picture. This picture relates to the theme “investigation” because I was trying to look for something nice to take a picture of. In other words, I was investigating for something nice to take a picture of. Then I found the leaf.
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken while I was doing homework in my room and my cat jumped up on the window sill above me and sat looking outside. My cat, Pepper, is only a few months old, so the world around her is very new and interesting to her. She is especially intrigued by the outside world. Unfortunately for her, my house sits next to a mountain, so it would be unsafe for her to go outside. So, instead of exploring outside, she settles for investigating what is beyond our house safely behind a window.

It's a drizzly morning, Amanda strolls through the neighborhood in a curious fashion. She's looking for something, but she doesn't know what. She's looking for something, she feels it in her gut. I myself knows... she's looking for herself. She wants to know her purpose, why she was put on earth. Amanda walks down my neighborhood every morning, looking for the circus.
Honorable Mention
It’s a picture of the new world in a book through a magnifying glass. I took this photograph in my house’s living room on a chair. This relates to investigation because you are investigating the new world inside of a book.
Honorable Mention
A simple diamond frame.
Something is on the other side but you can’t figure out what.
Maybe there is nothing on the other side.
What would be on the other side?
What are we doing on this side.
Are we supposed to be on the other side.
What could be there?
Many questions rise when looking at a simple diamond frame.
Honorable Mention
My photograph relates to this year’s contest theme because it was one of the first times I had ever gone hiking. I was investigating different parts of the world.
Honorable Mention
This image has a very suspicious feel to it. It shows the abandoned cigarette butts and makes the viewer question: Where is the smoker? Or Why did they abandon the cigarettes like that? The viewer may also marvel at the amount of cigarettes on the ground and cause them to ask questions like : Is this man addicted? Was there more than one person smoking? We tend to see a situation and automatically investigate or create a story to explain the situation. This is why the image reflects the theme of investigation.

Honorable Mention
This photo relates to the theme of "Investigation" because it captures my 1 year old nephew investigating the beach. This was his first time at the beach so everything about the environment was new to him, from the sand to the waves to the birds. He seemed to love the birds, but also seemed a little scared at the same time. He at first thought about walking into the water, but decided to test his toes and little fingers first. As he did this, he looked back at me and waved me to come closer as he smiled. He investigated how the tides come in and out and how he needed to run quickly back and forth to avoid getting too wet. I was so impressed by how quickly he learned and how brave he was. He didn't cry and wanted to explore on his own.

Even though my nephew is too young to speak for himself, he is a smart kid and I know he understands what I am saying to him. During the car ride to the beach, I explained to him the importance of taking risks. I believe that if you don't take risks in life, you will not fully experience life. My nephew nodded and smiled at me and I knew that he understood my advice. When I saw him actually take a risk that day by touching the ocean, it made me so happy and fulfilled to know that he really did hear me in the car.
Honorable Mention
It was taken at my local park. It has to do with investigation because there is someone always watching. Investigation is about finding something or looking into something more in depth. In this picture it represents how someone is always watching and investigating even when you are not thinking about it.

The photo is taken from the battered walls of Angels Gate, a long forgotten series of WWII bunkers nestled where Fort MacArthur itself once stood in the heart of modern day San Pedro, California.
Philosopher R. G. Collingwood once said that "the only clue to what man can do, is what man has done." Our history is a bread crumb trail awaiting inspection, whether or not we choose to inquire and follow where it leads however is left to the individual. History is not for the faint of heart nor short of courage; the knowledge comes from the journey, and the investigation of time is long and winding, but, in the end carries what we were, what we are, and what we will be, all you have to do is chose to look closer.

It was a cold and rainy February night in Northern California. I was wrapped in my favorite blanket sitting by a dim lit lamp holding onto a heavy mug of tea. The warmth of the mug brought about a surreal calm before the storm, transporting me to another world. Like sitting with the mad hatter in Alice-in-Wonderland. Staring at the little man on my cup made me wonder where was my tea from. This sent me into an "investigation" mode of thoughts. Did you know that the art of reading tea leaves is called tasseography and for centuries tea was only drank as medicine. My mom always says tea is only as good as you make it.
Honorable Mention
When I first entered my photography class, I knew almost nothing about photography or cameras. I had no clue what aperture, shutter speed, or iso was. This was a photo I took for one of my first photo projects when I was still investigating lines, shapes, and perspective.
Honorable Mention
This photograph was taken from my visit to the Descanso Gardens during their annual holiday night gallery. The light artwork in the exhibit was compelling, alluring, and beautiful, from its color changing flowers to its life-size glowing game board trail. It allows its viewers to investigate and ask questions about the possibilities of creativity one posses, and how they can turn these remarkable ideas into masterpieces.

noun
the action of investigating something or someone; formal or systematic examination or research.

...or is it humanities intrigue of the unknown, searching for answers, hidden at the bottom of the ocean or an empty bottle?

This photograph was taken while on a search for hidden meanings in street art.

Investigation means to examine something or someone. My picture represents a time when I was at the park investigating the nature all around me such as the birds chirping, butterflies flying, and even tree sap dripping from the trees. That’s when I came across a tree that had a reddish orange and black dotted ladybug resting on the bark with a dozen of her yellow eggs below her. I was amazed at what I saw because I’ve never seen anything like this before! As I investigated the ladybug and her eggs, neither the ladybug or the eggs moved. I stepped in really close to the tree to get a good picture.

I was helping my fad bring down some junk from the attic because we were having a garage sale the following week. There were giant boxes littered throughout the attic, filled with broken tools and toys from when my brothers and I were little. With all these memories from my early childhood, it was tough to sell these seemingly useless objects to a stranger. After a few minutes of reminiscing on the simpler times of my life, I sorted out which boxes had the least important stuff and passed them down to my fad. This photo best represents investigation because of the struggle to find objects to sell that don’t bring back cherished childhood memories.
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken in beautiful San Juan, Puerto Rico. A teenage boy is investigating all the brightly colored buildings. He dreams of being an architect. He has traveled the world admiring all the buildings. This boy has seen so many different people and places, but San Juan had the prettiest and brightest colored buildings he has ever seen. From on the top of the hill he's standing on, he views all the people walking by. This boy is looking for some inspiration for his future.
Honorable Mention
When I thought of investigation I thought of the words sneaky, mischievous, and despicable. I wanted the photo to look staged and over-exaggerated. I wanted a dramatic feeling to be expressed in the photo. This picture represents investigation because he is looking to the side, hiding behind a book, seeming as if he is trying to find something he isn't supposed to.
Honorable Mention
This photo was captured at the school library on January 17, 2018. The story behind the photo can be connected to the theme investigation in multiple ways - one being the fact that you are unable to see the girls face because it is hidden by a book, so there is a little mystery behind who she is.
Honorable Mention
My friend and I were assigned to do a scavenger hunt and take photos of the objects around the school. He decided to go in the elevator to get some shots and I took the stairway. Right before the doors started to close, I saw this possible opportunity that I could take. It's like I saw what the image could look like in my head. I called out his name to face me, doors were half way and snap. The picture that was in my head turned to reality.
Honorable Mention
This picture was taken in Belize City, Belize. This photo shows that there is more beyond the ending. The ending is only the beginning of new opportunities. You need to investigate further then what is expected. It could be shown that you need to stop at certain places in life, but to really learn and get experience you need to search through the closings and open up new beginnings.

While visiting the Grand Canyon in Arizona, my whole family and I were amazed by how far the canyon went and how wide it stretched. The canyon was truly an amazing site, including many different types of animal species, plants and artifacts. There was no end to what you could investigate within the walls of the canyon. Just by looking at it, you can tell so much about what had been there, and what might occur. While watching the beautiful sunset, setting over the canyon, I noticed that my older brother was sitting on a ledge, enjoying the beauty of the scene. I found that this would make a great picture and snapped a few photos of him through different angles. I wanted to capture his bodily expression as he gazed thoughtfully into the vast expansion that is the Grand Canyon. In the end, I was satisfied that I captured a picture of him wondering so much about the canyon's past. I debated on digitally editing this photo, but I felt like it was unnecessary since the natural beauty of the canyon projected itself onto the image. Even I investigated as well, looking for different species of animals and trying to figure out how far the river stretched. You can investigate anything really, but it's up to you in your imagination to determine what you will find next.
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken downtown under a street light on the side of the road. This photo represents investigation because the model is investigating on how he died, and he looking for clues.
Honorable Mention
This picture is displaying the adventure of the unknown ocean. In this investigation, I was finding something I have never seen before. The ocean is a beautiful scenery but, so much is undiscovered. We were going on this adventure to find whales and take data. The ocean in this picture is peaceful. But it can also be aggressive. What this picture means that everything that seems bad and unknown can also be very peaceful at the right time.

I’ve always been interested in the colors of the sky. At Sequoia, I witnessed one of the greatest sunsets I’ve ever seen. I took many photos of the landscape but what I was most interested in was the sky. The clouds, the birds, the colors, everything was ideal. After beholding this beautiful scene, I wanted to see more. My urge to investigate the possibilities the sky held grew stronger and it still grows to this day.

Los Angeles is chaotic but from that chaos there is a message in which you will learn from - you just need to find the right path that suits you. The two people in the center of the image have traveled through the right path which is why they are at peace with all the mayhem surrounding them. Now you need to investigate and find your right path to be successful and at peace. Everyone is unique in their own ways so don’t follow others paths or they’ll lead you the wrong direction. Nobody said it would be easy.
Honorable Mention
This ties into the Investigation theme because the word makes you think "crime scene", and crime scene means blood. A rose is a symbol of romance. Add blood and crime with romance, and together they make a great story - even in a picture.
Honorable Mention
I was investigating around my school and found this perfect place to take this picture. It has to do with investigating because there is a lot going on in this picture. This picture shows a blue sky, a lot of flowers and a bird flying.

We do not know why we can trust eleven-hundred pound animals. But, we can, to carry us upon their backs, to give us unconditional love, and to not judge. These are some of the many reasons that I love my gentle giants. They are my world everyday as soon as I get home from school. They are waiting for treats and to carry us to victory. The bonds of friendship are very mysterious and want to be investigated. The relationship bonds cannot be broken.
Honorable Mention
Some boundaries are set in our mind and others are set right in front of us. It’s up to you to figure out which is which.

I love Mommy's homemade bread. I also love other kinds of bread.

Breaking Day

As the day is breaking,
Morning sunrise is waking,
I wake to greet the light,
and memories in the making.

When I see the joyous sight,
It brings me such delight,
Investigating a brand new day
I know the day will be just right.

This photo was taken in Carrillo, Costa Rica. It is a jungle that was turned into a zip lining tour and monkey sanctuary. The great heights were exhilarating and made me feel free. The silence of the jungle followed by the chirps of birds and rustles from monkeys created a surreal experience. This photo invites viewers to follow the path and explore. The leading lines drive your eyes to the end of the road and the mystery leaves you wanting to investigate.
Honorable Mention
I took this at home in the night. The point of my picture is that the viewer must look closely at the picture and try to figure out what it is. I would just like explain that this is my first time.
Honorable Mention
This photo portrays investigation because my brother is investigating the beautiful landscape in front of him. You can tell he is interested by having his arms relaxed on the rail, showing he is relaxed and intrigued. My brother and I also love the outdoors so I thought it would be perfect for him to be so amazed by nature since he finds so much amusement and so many activities to do in it. If he were to investigate and find his greatest passion in anything it would be soccer, which he plays at a beautiful park and has an amazing time every practice.
Honorable Mention
Investigation is an experience only obtained by letting go of what you know; stepping out of your comfort zone and exploring different colors and cultures hidden right beneath your feet. I have lived in one city all of my life and thought I had seen it all, but I still manage to make discoveries like this every day. This photo shows the color and energy of a city whose people seem so concerned with themselves. Taking the time to investigate and photograph the beautiful colors of a stand in the midst of a bustling market forces you to appreciate the little things your city has to offer.
Honorable Mention
While I was taking this picture I was thinking, "Where are all of these people going?" This picture relates to this year’s theme of Investigation because where are they going? Are they going to see their family? Are they in a rush to get somewhere? Is it an emergency? Are they going to dinner? Or are they just out for a drive? I feel like this picture relates to this year’s theme because it's a mystery where they are going. So that is what Investigation means to me. I chose to take pictures of these cars on the freeway and used a slow shutter speed so it came out like a moving picture.
Honorable Mention
This photo describes investigation by showing a butterfly slowly investigating a flower. The butterfly is simply looking for something sweet to drink. So that butterfly stopped and investigated the flower. The photo also describes investigation in a different way. Look at the butterfly wings. What type of butterfly is that? You might want to go home and do a little bit of investigation yourself. The flower too! You might wonder what type of flower that is.
This photo definitely describes investigation in very many ways. What if I told you there is one more way to find investigation in this picture. If the butterfly was looking for something sweet in that flower what sweet item was it looking for? You will probably have to find that out while you’re doing your research.

The theme of this year's theme photography contest is "investigation". When I was pondering the theme, I was inspired to go out to look for a photo to take. I was drawn to this area in my yard because of the vibrant colors that made me want to investigate the scene.

I am thankful to the judges for taking the time to consider my work for the contest. Winning this award would truly encourage my photography skills and goals

The photo that I took was at one of the lakes in South Carolina when we visited for Christmas. Usually my family stays home for the holidays but this time we went to South Carolina for a specific reason. My cousin joined the Air Force after he graduated from high school,l and he was located in South Carolina. When my mom and her siblings lived in Bolivia, they always spent Christmas with my grandparents. When they moved here and moved far from each other, this became more and more difficult. Christmas is not only important to my family because it’s the holidays, but it’s also my grandfather’s birthday. My mom and her siblings swore that they would always get together for Christmas because our family needs to be able to spend time with everyone, since my grandparents live in Bolivia and fly down for the holidays. When we found out that my cousin couldn’t come back to California for the holidays, we didn’t really know what to do. We knew there was only one option and so we flew over to South Carolina. We got to eat Christmas dinner together as a family.
That solved the temporary problem, but what about next year? My cousin is going to be sent out to another base and we don't know if we can fly over again. So all of my family and I pushed that to the back of our minds and just explored South Carolina together. We were touring the area when we came across this lake where I took the picture. For me this is what best represents investigations because there’s the literal sense that we were exploring South Carolina but there’s the other reason. My family had to explore all of the options to get us together for the holidays. My mom, my uncle, and my aunt had to book tickets, rent a house, and find out how to get my cousin there. They had to investigate and explore every option to get us to see our cousin and they succeeded. That’s why I’m not worried about next year because if there’s a way to see my cousin for the holiday, my family will find it.

This photo was taken at a candy shop during the magical holiday season. I was shopping for gifts for my loving family but I was having trouble trying to find the perfect gift for my little brother who always makes me smile, even after a bad day. After some thorough investigations of many toy stores I walked into this candy shop on a whim. All of the bright colors instantly reminded me of his intricate personality. My investigation for the perfect gift turned out successful as I found the gift especially for him.

This photograph was taken on a family trip to the Phoenix Zoo. I enjoyed spending quality time with my family, but I did not enjoy where we spent it. I took this photo at the leopard exhibit on an extremely hot day. This scene stood out to me because something was wrong with what I was seeing. This animal was not meant to be in such an environment due to the fact that it just lie there for an extended period of time. Now, this might not have been the case, it still sparked a thought in my mind that, how can it be healthy that hundreds of species from all over the world inhabited this one environment. Each species lives in a different ecosystem due to there varying survival qualities, so how could it be possible that all these species lived a healthy life at this zoo?

This led me to grow an understanding that zoos are not as happy as society have made them to be. I believe deeply in my morals, which are maintaining equality amongst all living things and to be a humanitarian for those who need it. Therefore it breaks my heart that still to this day animals are being used for selfish purposes. The only reason zoos were created was to make money off of guests observe animals in a safe way. The truth is, God did not create animals on his earth to be caged, he created them to be free and get the chance to live a happy life like humans. Equality needs be shown toward these animals because they are given one chance to live a life on this Earth just like the the rest of the living specimens that inhabit it. This animal behind the cage in my photo deserves an investigation of a fair life. A true investigation needs to occur in these zoos to determine whether they are necessary to have. Is there enough evidence to determine why zoos are essential to the survival and overall happiness of human life? An investigation is all that is needed to uncover the disturbing facts about how zoos treat their animals. These animals deserve a voice so its up to us to make it heard. I took this photo so that at least this one animal can be heard, whether it be good or bad. This may not be the typical approach to this theme, but it is one that I believe is necessary to spread awareness to better our world.
Honorable Mention
The photograph was taken in a photography studio. My photo relates to this year's contest theme, "investigation" because the person is a suspect of a crime that we do not know. The rope was a symbol to indicate the arrest. The manly hands of the person was to show that any hands look similar but you don't really know what they are capable of. In this case the man was accused of murder.

One day I was craving chocolate, but I was afraid what flavor it might be. What I was really craving was a milk chocolate with caramel filling. I did not want mint or any dark chocolate. Without a description in the box it was hard. It was harder to determine the certain flavor I wanted to get because the size, color, and shape were very similar. I chose the first one not knowing the flavor, milk chocolate with caramel. I was lucky, but the white box of delicious, mouthwatering chocolates was calling my name. Giving into temptation I chose another, but as the bitter and weird taste hit my tounge I knew it was dark chocolate. They say third time’s a charm. I chose another feeling lucky, but I wasn’t. It was mint - Eww! Taste like toothpaste! After feeling the sense of fortune leave my body I stepped away from the box of chocolates and went on with my day.
Honorable Mention
Whenever anyone sees my car they associate it with something sketchy and think i am up to no good. Cops have been pulling me over and asking me about my car. I have probably been pulled over 4 times in the past 3 weeks of having my car. Everytime I ask what the problem is they never answer me, They just feel the need to investigate. I have never even gotten a ticket since I haven't done anything wrong. My car has a mysterious and questionable vibe to it. The Chrysler 300 has this stereotype of being a suspicious type of car. I took the mean, blacked out car and put it in front of a very natural friendly background to show that it's just another natural normal car. Yet keeping that suspicion and have pedestrians wondering what is behind the windows.
Honorable Mention
This is a photo of the clouds when it was raining outside my house in the street. I investigated the sky when it rained. Thank you, for reviewing my photo.
Honorable Mention
On a Sunday evening, I saw my dads telescope sitting covered in dust in the corner of the living room. I asked him if I could take it outside to look at the view of the city. As I was setting up the telescope, the colors of the setting sun were reflecting off the parts of the telescope. I ran back inside to get my camera, and when I had come back outside the sky had already changed so much. I took multiple photos over the course of ten minutes to observe the changing colors in the sky. I think this photo represents investigation because a telescope looks beyond what’s right in front of you. It is investigating the world from a different point of view.
Honorable Mention
My photo was taken at a mall that was going through construction. This photo relates to the theme "Investigation" because in an investigation, there are a lot of different factors that are involved; there are twists and turns that can be very complicated- but in the end, they all connect and add up. In this case, all the poles and bars add up to make the building.
Honorable Mention
This photograph was taken in my home at my brother's desk. I put the scene together to emphasize the human element to solving crime as opposed to advances in technology. After speaking with a family friend who works for the local police department, I learned about how frustrating it can often be to solve a case even when the answer is right in front of you, and I wanted to portray this feeling through a photo.
Fun fact: If you look closely at the sticky notes, you'll find the lyrics to the theme song from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
Honorable Mention
I captured this image of my younger brother's toes while he was playing video games on the floor of my living room. I wrapped his foot in bananas while he continued his game, oblivious to my creation. The idea of the photo relates to the theme, "Investigation" in that it depicts how much there really is to investigate on small items like toes or bananas, in this case. The distinct lines in my brothers toes and the dark spots scattered across the bananas focus in on something the human eye typically would not and portrays an unknown, tiny world in which artists should investigate.
Honorable Mention
I was sitting on a bench, stressing about what I wanted to submit. My friend held a piece of gum into the sunlight and I instantly remembered the theme. Then, I thought about people investigating, or examining dollar bills to see if they're counterfeit. The shot itself is kind of like a personal point of view of someone checking to see if a dollar is real. Initially there was no meaning behind the use of a single dollar bill, but I find it quite funny due to the fact that there probably are people that check 1s and 5s. In my opinion that's a little ridiculous, but to each their own! I had fun creating this photo and the memory to go along with it. Although the title is one word, I believe that it helps depict what's going on in the image.
Honorable Mention
I tried to create more of an accident investigation more than a scientific investigation.
Honorable Mention
In a crime scene, a detective always has to find the clues to solve the case for the victim. He/she always wants to make sure that the truth is discovered. This allows for justice to be served to the criminal. This means that every clue is important. No matter how small or big the clue is, the case must be solved.
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken during a parade in Chinatown. No matter how chaotic a place is, beauty can be found among it all.
Honorable Mention
The photo was taken at a park, I believe the picture relates to the theme because of how an investigation has various reasons on why to be cautious, and in this case, I found this caution tape as if there was a crime to be investigating.

Honorable Mention
The picture was taken in my backyard where I go to play with my dog, Nixon, who is also my best friend. A synonym for investigation is exploration. Even though my backyard is not huge, it still is big enough that my dog wants to explore it. Dogs can hear, smell, and see things that humans cant. That's what makes them better when it comes to investigation or exploration. Have you ever heard of the phrase, " curiosity killed the cat?" Well, it's good thing he is not a cat.

The Elk were grazing upon the fields. As soon as one paused during his evening meal, he looked at me. As I was investigating these majestic animals so were they.
Honorable Mention
I try to use whatever is at hand, whether it's the camera as well as what might be laying around. I ask myself, "What if?"...what if I try to photograph something multiple ways...many fail but I only hope one is a success. In this case, taking a picture THROUGH an empty water bottle, that was laying there answered my question,
'What if?'.

The photo was taken from the outside of an alley. This photo captures an empty and mysterious alleyway. Alleyways are often perceived as paths that lead to dead ends, but in reality they just lead to many new and interesting places. Often alleys are home to many small but interesting places, and in this picture, the alley appears to have an end, but it leads into another path. Along the way there are small restaurants that you may not be able to to see if you do not explore the alleys. This represents that as you do more investigation and exploration, many new paths and new adventures arise.

You can always hide your true feelings with your facial expressions and body stances but the one thing that can’t be hidden are the feelings within the eyes. The emotions within the eyes are unobtrusive, but they’re always there. Since animals cannot speak, it is hard to understand what they are feeling. Just look into their eyes and you will be able to feel the pain, happiness, and confusion that they are feeling. Looking through my cat’s eyes you can see her ferocity.

I was in my photography class when I took this picture. I was investigating different ways to take pictures when I came across a tutorial on how to shoot silhouettes of people. Then an idea popped in my head that became something special. When I see or hear the word investigation, I always think of mystery. There are crime scenes to investigate, solve murders, and catch criminals. What better way to depict the word investigate then the man who solved all crimes, who is smarter then the average man, the literal fictional character himself, Sherlock Holmes. This picture meant a lot to me because I learned something new and had to take this picture using the limited resources I had. The silhouette was taken using a model (a classmate), a cardboard cutout of the famous Sherlock Holmes hat, and a cardboard cutout of a pipe. I used a backdrop with a softbox in front of it and had my model sit in front of the softbox, to create a light behind her. The light behind made it easy to give my model a dark front to give an illusion of a silhouette.

The Eye of anything is what can see everything. Investigation could not be seen if nothing had an eye. This photo was taken at my school when I was fumbling with my camera and after I looked through all of my photos, I realized that the eye is more than just a thing on a face. It is a great part of any living body that guides you to your destination. It guides you to investigations and investigating different problems. I decided to choose a photo of an eye because it ties investigation together.

This photo was taken at a gas station just a few miles outside of Las Vegas. I was surprised to find a security camera in such a desolate place and thought it contrasted the empty sky above it well.

Los Angeles offers the good and the bad. It is up to you what to wish for. This photo was taken on Olvera Street. A wishing well offers people the opportunity to investigate their own desires. When a person goes to any wishing well, they do not always know what they want at the top of their head. They reflect to uncover what they truly wish. People may throw coins after knowing what they truly want. They may leave hoping that their wish is granted. There are many wishing wells in Los Angeles and everyone wishes for something different.

This photo was taken on campus after school. All students were out and about on campus. The photograph is able to relate to the theme of investigation because it's not very clear as to what's going on or to what the 'subject' is drawn towards. The background is blurred but the 'subject' has been the main focus as to not knowing where, or what they're looking at. What may they be thinking? How does this person actually look? All that is seen are their features and side of the 'subject' face. The smallest of features and details or things are the main things that matter to help identify a person and it's just the little details from this picture that help investigate what may be happening or going on in this picture... in the exact moment that it was taken.

On January 9th, 2018 when the sun was rising, rain was pouring and alarm clocks were about to go off through the neighborhood. Mud came crashing down the street, bringing with it cars, an RV, boulders, trash cans, patio furniture and more. We watched from the window, feeling small in comparison to the power of nature. In the aftermath, the neighborhood was scouring for their cars and personal belongings not knowing where the mudslide took it all.

This photo was taken in my backyard, and it focuses on a beach chair sitting by my pool. Taken on a cold and gloomy day, the frailness of the leaf contrasting the softness of the cushion stuck out to me. This photo was taken on film, so I was therefore investigating a new way to shoot. Also, the photo can confuse because the subject is not immediately apparent, requiring investigation by the viewer to figure it out.
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken at my local park and is of a tree on which light was only striking half of it. This light caused an interesting shadow to be cast upon the other half of the tree. I was using film for the first time when I took this, and thus I was investigating a new way to take photos. Additionally, the interesting texture provided from the bark on the tree forces the viewer to further investigate the image.

This photo was taken in a crowded place full of stores. There are lanterns hanging above the people walking between. My photo is about changes over time and noticing them. No matter how anything looks, whether it’s man-made or natural. No matter what one side looks, dead or lively with colors, in the end both will be better than when they started out. If only we could all take a bit of time and investigate our world and notice things a bit more.

Art has been a large part of my life, but I've never really been in photography. Mixed media and other art forms mesh well with my style of heavy distortion. Splashes of random colors mixed with geometry are my favorite forms of expression. When gathering photos for this project, I felt very out of my element. The confidence started building up when I broke out of my shell and started seeing things that I liked, heavy industrial areas, lights, blue scenes and neon districts. I truly investigated what I loved about composition and realizing the busy works need their own investigation when observed.
Honorable Mention
The two photos that were taken to create this composite image were taken on one of my school photography walks in a nearby rain drainage ditch. Photoshop CC was used to combine the two photos to create the composite image. This photo reminds me of investigation because of two things. The chains which are in the image can be a sign of criminal justice through investigation. And the wooden pallet that is surrounded by water which can be natural prison.

This photo was taken in a tunnel near a park I go to. I saw the tunnel and I just had to take a photo inside. It doesn’t matter what situation you’re in. As long as you investigate your surroundings and what’s going on, you’ll be fine. You’ll reach the end of that journey and notice how much easier life begins to be. All you have to do is get out of the dark and reach the light. It may be difficult, but if you investigate you’ll reach the end eventually.

Down, down, the elevator shaft
Down into the unknown.
Whatever's down there
I suppose
Is just an old elevator.
What did you expect.
But you never know,

This picture was taken inside a building during a field trip. As the "poem" above suggests, the subject is the elevator in the building that is no longer in use.

You can investigate anywhere, at anytime. Even in your car, a ride anywhere is an opportunity to investigate and learn more about your surroundings. There's always something to look at that we could look more into another day...

This photo was taken just after a school event. My brother said he wanted to drive around kind of like an adventure. I decided to take a picture of the sunset because there were little details that caught my attention. It wasn't like the sunsets I would usually see. I decided to take a picture of it and investigate the difference between this sunset and other sunsets. This was also a time where my brother and I didn't get along, so it was kind of how we became closer.

This photo was taken around the lunch area at my school. This photo relates to the theme of "Investigation" because in my favorite investigation/crime movies and shows they always seem to have leaves falling from a tree and this photo has a couple of leaves on the ground.
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken in Downtown LA. This describes the topic of investigation because it involves not just the physical matter of the image but more of a mind over matter perspective. We see buildings, cars and people, and we just over look in why the buildings are there, why it was built the way it was built and how did it influence the city of today. Buildings have long histories of what went on in the building during a certain period which can be written in books/ papers for many people to come.

Over Presidents' Day weekend, 2018, I went to Salt Lake City to visit my sister. My sister loves going and investigating abandoned or run down places when we visit each other. So, while in Salt Lake, we wanted to explore the city. While exploring we came across this monument next to the freeway with all this graffiti. Upon further investigation, we found it to be called suicide rock. Suicide has been a hard subject in my family to talk about, and I found this to be a great place for me to remember my family that I have lost to such a horrible thing.

The reason I picked this photo was because I went to the science center, and thought it was cool. I thought it was cool because it had many journeys and then in 2012, it had a long journey to the science museum from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It had twenty six missions counting the one to the California Science Center. The Endeavour was a replacement for the ship Challenger. The most interesting fact I learned was It was pulled by a Toyota Tundra and it went through the streets of Inglewood and Los Angeles.

I took this picture because it shows that there are endless possibilities on what you can find if you stop and really take a closer look at anything.

This is a photo of my young cousins investigating their experiment. The question being asked was, “What could clean a penny the best?”

We all took our guesses and began conducting our experiment. There were about seven of us picking and choosing different liquids trying to answer the question. All of us raged in ages from a five year old to an adult, but we still had the same action while conducting our experiment. Investigating.
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken at school on a rainy day. This photo relates to investigation because the person is the lookout for someone while we do not know who is taking the photo. We don't know if there are good intentions or bad or why they are on the look out for this person.

“The eyes are the mirror of the soul and reflect everything that seems to be hidden; and like a mirror, they also reflect the person looking into them.”
-Paulo Coelho

“There's always another story. There's more than meets the eye.”
- W.H. Auden

What does this mean? Are these sayings true? Are they just there to confuse you? Maybe a bit of both. Here you see the subject holding a magnifying glass to his eye. The photo however, has a deeper meaning. If you look closely at the subjects blue-green eyes you can see a reflection of a fence and a deep blue sky. Your eye will then drift left and you will see the photographer himself, camera in hand. If you did not notice this right away then I have done my job. There is more than meets the eye in this picture and you can see that the eye is truly the mirror to the soul and reflect things that seem to be hidden...

I was at an old warehouse when I found this smokestack. By working our way up to this small room underneath the smokestack, I was able to get this picture looking up through it towards the sky. I really liked the aesthetic of the light filtering behind the light fixture and peaking through the boards. I think my favorite aspect of this image is the lines leading up through the smokestack and pulling your eyes to the sky.

This photo was taken in an alley that has a very abandoned edgy look. I believe this photo shows investigation and keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat wondering "what happened?" And like the saying goes, "a picture is worth a thousand words." That's what I feel this picture is - one where anyone can think of a story or an idea that corresponds to the picture. And that's their way of "investigating" the image.

At San Marcos Lake in the fall, during a camping trip, my family and I took a walk after lunch. I wanted to investigate the beautiful scenery around the lake. We came upon a family of ducks where I found out that they usually breed and grow their family. They were under the bridge near the overgrown water grass throughout the year. This is why I wanted to take this photo, because I was interested were the duck were coming from.

When you look in this image, what do you see? I think we all see a skull. What do you think of when you see a skull? The first thing I see is pirates. What are some characteristics of pirates? They are strong, brave, and fearless. Every time I go on this board and look at the skull, it reminds me to be fearless and when I am fearless I can do tricks much better. So investigate this board now. What do you see?

In high school, you learn a lot about yourself. Almost as if you are on an investigation to find out who you truly are. I took this photo of one of my classmates Daniel, the President of the Gay Straight Alliance Club at our school. It relates to the theme because in his high school journey he explored to find out more about himself.

This is my submission. It is a picture of the hills very close to my house burning. This fire started around 1:30pm on September 1st and lasted about 10 days.1,061 firefighters worked at containing that fire. After I went home from being evacuated, I started to wonder how the fire started. Such a big fire had to be started by something awful. Surprisingly, it was started by a small campfire. After the fire, I investigated my backyard to find a lot of ash, burnt chips of wood, and etc. It was incredible to think that such a small thing destroyed so much land in such little time.

Investigation is a series of events that lead to an end point, essentially a journey toward a destination. This photo was taken by the beach following a girl taking her first step into the unknown. Her destination isn’t clear, it’s her start that is seen which is the most important part leading to her aspirations. Every journey has to start somewhere, the first step. The first step is the hardest to overcome but it's this initial change that reaps life's greatest rewards.

My sister is feeling the grass. This is her first time touching grass so she is discovering the grass with her sense of touch. She is also looking at the grass so she knows what grass looks like. She is fascinated by how the grass feels because this is her first time discovering something new.
Honorable Mention
Investigation is when you experiment with something to learn more about it - its properties, effects, and attributes. I chose to investigate the effect of having a flashlight shining into the lens of a camera during a photograph, and my photo allows us to learn about how bright lights capture the frame and make the photograph appear unique and unreal.

I waited and waited. Then a bird flew into my cartoon. I spent hours trying to get a perfect photo of a bird. The wait paid off. I caught the pigeon at that decisive moment. NO…this was not Photoshopped or changed in any way…It is exactly what my photograph looked like when I took the it A second before and a second after, it was gone!

This is a photo of magnified flowers from my backyard. Just as it is shown in the photo, we investigate what we are good at, plant our seed, and try grow in that area. We should plant many seeds and find out which ones will grow the tallest and most successful. To flourish in life, you must try new things in order to recognize your strengths and be able to benefit from of them.

This photo was taken at the school in the grass area while we were trying to find things to take pictures of. This photo relates to investigation because it shows close up details of the ball that has been used many times in the past and will be used again. I question how many games has it won? Maybe my next one...

What "Investigation" means to me, is to search out and examine something hidden - that we take for granted. I pass by that location every day, but not once have I stopped and look at the obvious composition that can be lined up in a way that I really love.

Inside every household, there are eyes watching. Searching for answers to their problems. These eyes are the gateway to the mind, but what lies inside that mind we may never know.

My photo contains marbles in a water container that have lights glowing from the bottom of the container.

This photo expresses the theme of investigation because the picture portrays marbles glowing in different colors. But does the water have an effect on the marbles glowing in this type of shade, or is it the marble itself that gives off this color when colors shine on it. Why are there spots of lights splattered onto the container? What could that be? Is there a deeper meaning when light hits water in certain angles or is it the marbles again that are causing these spots with their reflection?
Honorable Mention
My classmates and I were at a Metro station walking towards the train stops when I took this photo. We were on a walking field trip to the MOCA when we passed these lights, and I felt like they spoke to me. This connects to the theme of investigation because I felt like when we walked around LA, we learned how the art speaks for itself. To me, it felt like the lights were saying that the brightness of the world will not and cannot be dulled or hidden by the dark events that have happened recently. I also felt like the photo was saying that the happiness of the people will always be there even if something really sad is happening.

This photo was taken at the top of the Twin Peaks in San Francisco. Once you have reached the apex of Twin Peaks, you can capture a 360 degree view of San Francisco. Originally when I took this picture, I was mesmerized with God’s creation. This photo relates to “investigation” because you can see the big picture when carefully examining things. Sometimes we wish we had the birds eye view where we can just see everything below us and know what’s going on there. In this picture, I didn’t just get an overview of the city of San Francisco, but I also got an overview of how things come together beautifully and in an orderly fashion when you look at it in a different perspective. Investigation requires hard work especially when I had to hike up the mountain to take this picture, but once you get to where you want to go, you feel at ease and what you did was worth it.

The photo was taken at my school at the field, and it was near at a class window. And the theme was investigation. So I took a picture and did not notice the bug. The bug also has a new life because it's the new year. So now, people step on bugs, but do they think before they do it? What would happen if that was them - to feel how a bug lives and to see the world that big to them.

When the word investigation is brought up, a magnifying glass always pops into my head. They always bring small things closer to you. This is interesting because the sun is so massive, but it being in the magnifying glass makes it look smaller; and we all know we cannot look directly into the sun! The photograph with the halo and the sun is one of my favorite pictures I have ever taken, so I wanted to incorporate it into something fitting. The way the circles descend from the magnifying glass, to the halo, to the ironically puny sun shows an extremely deep, 92.96 million mile away, investigative process.

-I took this photo on a walking field trip.

-Hell. They all say it’s bad. Yet no one has ever been there to say so. They all just make the assumption, “It’s just a door. How bad can it be?” There’s more to it than hearing people say “what the hell.”
See for yourself.

-It’s a stairway, heading down. Good or bad. Heaven or hell. Won’t find out until you investigate.

On the beach's wet sand, hidden away beside a ramp, is a beautiful flower, How did it sprout on the salty grounds of the beach? As it moves along with the breeze, will its delicate self fly away into the ocean? All these questions, yet it goes unknown. The photo is unaltered, yet the flower still remains as beautiful as it was in person.

I decided to snap a fast picture while in flight to my destination. This picture relates to this years theme of investigation because of things we do not know. The things we do want to find out that is not stated in this image is where was I going? Who was I with? What time of day was this picture taken? The thing is, in this picture there are many things we do not know, but the thing we all do know is the fact that these moments where you capture something so beautiful it is not only captured with a camera, but it is captured with our eyes that saves this image to our memories.

I call this photo History's Marks because the orange tinted areas are rust from the barbed wire in the glass. This photo was taken as I investigated Alcatraz Prison with my family. Prisoners tried to escape by throwing stones and pebbles to break the windows. To me this photo stands for depression and how being imprisoned can impact your life.

The wall prototypes are located in San Diego Sector, specifically, Otay Mesa, which is Chula Vista Stations area of responsibility (AOR). There are eight prototypes that were built by six contractors, and are out near some of the pre-existing fence. Border Patrol Agents patrol and investigate this area to make sure that nobody is crossing into the US illegally, and/or smuggling drugs and people across the border. Agents risk their life every single day to go out into dangerous areas to investigate and keep our country safe.

I have very unique opportunities being a part of the Border Patrol family, this includes getting to photograph something like the prototypes. I hope to create peaceful discussion for people who view this photo, seeing as it is a very political image.

I retreated from my home, surrounded by the tangle of wires, the incessant electric hum, the looming towers, into the forest. To my dismay, as I walked through the forest, there was no more than what I had seen at home - electrical lines, cell towers, buildings, severed trees. The forest was cold and depressing, dark and deep, broken by unnatural geometric shapes that erupted from the ground and passed through the trees. Yet, over hours travelling through the forest, I stumbled upon a plot of hope -- a plot where nature was left nearly untouched, where nature was nearly pristine. Concealed by a veil of leaves, a beam of light shone out of the canopy of the trees, upon the patch of lush green grass, overgrown and unkept. It was a glimmer of hope in a forest of darkness, a world polluted and dominated by man.

On a grassy hill in the middle of San Jose at 11:31 AM, a young woman sat. She got her photo taken.
It only takes a mere second to capture a moment forever.
Why was this woman on a grassy hill at 11:31? Did she drive to the hill? Walk? Is this a daily routine of hers?
Why is she squatting above the grass? Does she not want to get her clothing dirty? Is she tired of all the walking it took to get up the hill?
She is oblivious of the photographer, flipping her hair in the calm wind mornings. An audience may want to know more of her life.
But they could fill in the blanks on their own.

The picture was taken in my backyard. I used water to make the ice. The ice came from my mom’s icemaker. I wanted to know what would happen to the ice after it melts. I think it will help the grass grow. Then I threw the ice on the grass and waited until the ice melted. The ice turned into water. I think the water will help the grass grow.

I took this photo in late 2017 at a botanical garden in my hometown. Each year, they host a nighttime light show for a month, and since my mom works there, she let me in to see and photograph it one night. As I was walking around, the lights were definitely fascinating, however I felt if I experimented with my methods of taking photos, I could have more intriguing results. For this photo, I used my camera to create a long exposure of 12 seconds. I had set my camera on the ground to take this, so after I clicked the shutter, I ran around the lights to trigger the sensors that made them change colors and direction. In the end, I felt that this photo captures this years contest theme of investigation since I used varying lighting and camera settings to capture this unique image. When people see this photo, they don’t understand what it is, and have to investigate to figure out the answer, which I think is pretty neat.

I had never heard of this building before my class’ walking field trip. It is important to investigate your surroundings because you can find beautiful meanings within something that many tend to overlook. An elevator in the midst of travel is a beautiful sight; the colors smudging and blurring behind a door that will soon open to a completely new surrounding. It’s like the beginning of the end. The start of a new endeavor, but not quite. It’s stuck in between, never fully opening itself up. All of this thought comes out of investigating something so new and foreign to me, but a staple in my home city.

While I was at the beach celebrating my friend's birthday, I was enthralled by the enjoyment of the children at the beach. Despite the cold water of the Pacific Ocean and the unavoidable sand, the smiles radiating from these girls' face proved to me that happiness is unconditional. Happiness, no matter where you are, or what you are going through, can always be found. This photograph expresses that happiness is not difficult to investigate. Like these girls in the photograph, allow joy to overcome your burdens.

I wish one day that we humans can stop worrying about all the problems in the world and just appreciate the natural world around us. Like dogs sniffing away, searching, and exploring, and how they live in the moment doing the best they can. Ruling their little jungle domains oblivious and not caring about the reality of just being a backyard. I would love to have that carefree serenity, that pure honest feeling of knowing and believing that we should just be happy what with we have. And that wonder of exploring the possibilities and wonders that we have is similar to how the noble dog treats this small piece of land like a kingdom, like a world of capabilities, like a home.

The photo was taken at school. In my history class, we were investigating how you can't have love without pain. The flowers represent love and the dead flowers and petals represent pain. You can always love someone, but you might not always like them. In a relationship you can have some good laughs but sometimes you're arguing with your other half.

This is a teenager whose IQ puts him in the genius range. He is constantly challenging his mind to think more and enjoys coming up with solutions to complicated problems. His life revolves around investigation. As you can see, he is squinting in this photo while he is surrounded by socializing teenagers at school. It has been proven that squinting while thinking is a result of the brain trying to limit visual stimuli in order to free up mental resources. For this same reason, we often shut our eyes when we need to think really hard about a subject. I took this photo because I think this is a teen who truly embodies the investigative spirit.

This photograph represents a girl trying to find who she is. The girl that she sees in the mirror is who she believes she is but deep inside she knows that she's way happier than what is shown. She tries to find out who she is and let people see the real happy her. But there is one thing stopping her from showing it. It's herself.

Seeking after and investigating who I am, what I feel and what makes me human. To investigate what is truth, I must first investigate myself, feelings and motives. I want to investigate what scares me, makes me happy, what I value.... Hopefully, this photo reflects what is going on inside of me.

Bodies of water throughout all of history have always been places of introspection, mythical portals, places to see oneself, to see the world in a different light. Through the action of seeing your reflection you explore, you investigate, you consider the reciprocal of who you are, the reflection of who you are. What is revealed in the shimmering waters of a pond shows the unobscured truth. In order to find yourself you must get lost in your reflection and the world of reflections in which it is contained. Like Alice from Through The Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll this photo depicts a girl reaching towards a new world, reaching towards the unknown, in order to know herself. Reaching for her reflection in the “looking glass” she is about to investigate who she is.

This photo was taken in my own bedroom, at my desk. It relates to the theme, investigation, by showing common investigation tools, phones, and a computer mouse to signify the internet, with the watch movement in the overlay to show the passage of time.

In my way, I find fear. Fear that I may never move again. So I must wait and wait for the correct time to break free and show my beautiful colors. In this investigation, I have found what it truly means to never move. In this investigation, I try and try, but it never works, I can never move. The plant being trapped in ice, branches red with sap like the blood in my veins. In this investigation this photo shows that we can only see the now. While in the calm, we can care about the future.

I took a walk with my young cousin. I had carried around my camera in case of a moment worth capturing. I captured this brief moment of my four year old cousin. Her young and innocent mind that’s filled with curiosity caused her to be more vulnerable to her surroundings. She investigated the sounds and allowed the noises to lead her direction. After a long walk, she was tired and hungry. She used her senses and her interest of food and sleep to make her investigate the inside. As the spectator watching her in person, I decided that I wanted to capture the moment of innocent curiosity. I did not capture her face in the photo because I do not want to limit the meaning of innocent curiosity. But, because the timestamp of the youth that would have been carried her face is lacked in the photo, I wanted the image to be perceived in the past and have deeper meaning beyond a specific subject, thus the black and white and the rule of thirds.

This picture was taken with a Fish-eye lens on a EOS Cannon Rebel T6 in a photography studio.
I see the word Investigation as a formal or systematic examination. My photo show a person talking and is justifying his truth. No eye contact is made. His hands are sweaty. He is nervous. Why?
You can never truly know what is going on inside a human's mind. You can only wonder.

Investigation is something we do on a daily basis. It can be about anything and everything. But investigating in nature is a really unique experience. The big things like the mountains, trees, oceans, skies, wolves, etc. And the little things like leaves, flowers, streams, rocks, birds, etc. They all require one thing, investigation. Whether its big or small, long or wide, you can always investigate the things that interest you the most. I took the picture on the dirt side of creek park. This photo describes to investigation because nature has a lot to do with investigating, you’re always looking around and trying to observe the little and the big things. And us as humans need to investigate in order to survive. For example, food- is it healthy to eat? Water- is it clean to drink? Plants- can we use this plant to make medicine and resources from it?

This photograph shows my third grade teacher following his vocation to teach and share his love for God. I was in the hallway at my school. My photograph relates to investigation because we all have to investigate our vocation and our beliefs. Taking pictures from unexpected angles is one of my favorite things to do. This photograph is of the Golden Gate Bridge on the north end of San Francisco, California. Being from a different town, we do not see this caliber of engineering every day. My family and I crossed the Golden Gate Bridge four times on February 23rd, 2018. I knew I had to investigate this beautiful piece of our world. What I found most interesting was that it spans over one mile. The Golden Gate crosses the passage between the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay.

This is a photo of downtown Los Angeles taken from the freeway while I was in traffic. I took this photo while I was sitting in traffic on my way to take photos in Santa Monica. I think this relates to investigation because it is a photo of a big city and you don't know what is inside lurking through the streets, and people want to go their to investigate what there is in the city.

I took this photo while on a cruise to Jamaica with my friends and family. This cruise was my first cruise ever and even my first time leaving the country. On the day we were supposed to leave the ship onto the Jamaica port, I woke up and stepped onto the balcony and took a second to look at the beautiful view. I wanted this memory to last forever, so I took a picture. To me, this picture represents investigation from the elements of the land (Jamaica) in the background and the side of the boat. The land in the background represents the land sailors investigated. The side of the boat shows how many historians investigated the world. Christopher Columbus sailed on many ships to investigate the world and find new lands. Many other famous historians used ships to investigate the world such as James Cook, Francis Drake, Joshua Slocum, and many others. This picture will always mean to me the first time my family and I left the country to investigate other parts of the world.

I went on a walk to the park on a sunny day with my dog and took my camera with me. I was searching for something that stood out towards me. I was wandering around, and let my dog off the leash. After an amount of time, I noticed that I forgot about my dog and he was on the other side of the park. I ran towards him to get him, then spotted the leaf, which happened to be right in front of the sun. It looked beautiful and shined bright. I went closer, and took the photo which looked really nice. I investigated the park for something that stands out, and this was what I found.

I took this photo at my school. This photograph relates to this year's contest theme "Investigation" because it shows the crime scene and how someone's foot print was left at the scene, and they put up the numbers so they know all the little details at the scene.

I got lost in San Francisco and it was a great time investigating lots of things that I did not know existed. I stumbled on amazing things to take photographs of. I was even able to see the Chinese New Year. This is a surrealistic photo of my weekend investigation of San Francisco.

I was at school, in a chemistry class, observing the students while they perform an experiment. The chemistry student investigates the relationship between pressure and temperature by performing the water-candle experiment. The student in the picture is actually my younger sister who happens to adore her chemistry class as much as I did when I was a sophomore.

Investigation is happening all over the world. Some planets are getting investigated right now, but also important people from a while back like Dred Scott have been investigated. Investigation is important to help understand the past and discover a new future. Dred Scott was a slave who fought for his freedom and Rosa Parks was a woman who did not give up her seat on a bus when segregation was legal. Mars is a big mystery right now but when the mystery is solved it could become history in the future. Jupiter is a gas planet but it has some mysteries itself like the great red spot. These are just a couple of the big investigation stories of the past and the present. Investigating leads us to new discoveries and a better understanding of the world.

For a moment, the rain, lightning, and thunder paused. It was the first time it had stopped raining for the longevity of the gloomy day. Out peaked the sun, entering through my blinds and warming my face. I witnessed as its rays danced across the fields around my house. A soft breeze swayed along nature and left it in tranquility. I was left in awe by the scene as the light reached the distant storm and refracted with the raindrops to create a magnificent rainbow. I rushed from the room and grabbed my camera knowing that the sun would not be out long. Even as I took the picture from a window within my house the rainbow had begun to dissipate, the sun sinking back into the clouds.
I surveyed the calm of the storm, witnessing its creation and capturing my investigation of its beauty and serenity. I found the photograph to depict the juxtaposing creations of a storm. The raindrops can be seen as the brutality of the storm making all retreat to the comfort of shelter. Yet, these same raindrops create the vista of the rainbow and supply the earth with life.

The location of the picture is from the bus station. During one of the school days we had off, my family and I decided to go to downtown., and because of the far destination, we took a bus there. When we parked our car and walked to the station, we were greeted with three oddly conjoined clocks. It truly fascinated me, because I had never seen this art before, and I felt it had so much meaning behind it, so I took a picture of it.

My photograph relates to this year’s Investigation theme because of how unique the clocks are made. Not everyday can you see clocks stationed just as this, and because it is presented at such a normal location, in this case a bus station, adds to the strangeness of the photo. Not only do the clocks relate to Investigation, but the straps holding it up adds meaning to it as well. The three clocks represent time, because it is the machine that measures so, and the straps holding it above the ground represent how humanity controls and uses time itself. The reason why the clocks are just a bit foggy on the inside represents the cluelessness of time itself. Time is hard to define, it is a length of reality, or measurement of something true. Time is such a mysterious concept, and to truly grasp the full meaning of it is one of humanity’s big steps.

You can find opportunities in the most strangest, vaguest, or most normal places in the world. Something as simple as three clocks suspended above the ground can emit so much meaning, but the only way to obtain it, is to believe it yourself. I had taken many other pictures, most of which were during my trip. But in this photo, not only do I feel I can qualify for a win, but the meaning and explanation of it can also persuade the judges as well.

The image shown is a tree with a magnifying glass that can lead to investigation. Investigation is the act of investigating someone, something, or an object. Investigation can be as simple as looking at an object and gathering data about that object. It could also, be as complex as trying to find the culprit of a crime looking for hidden clues such as fingerprints, blood, or a hair strand.

The world is mysterious, and it's easy to lose your way. Oftentimes, your eyes may become clouded from the rest of the world, causing you to divert from the right path. A little bit of investigation may be required to find your way after you are lost. If you search well enough, you will surely find the trail back to the light. The smoke may shield your eyes, but the light will show you the way.

A few weeks ago, I went on a field trip to a wastewater treatment plant. As I was understanding how wastewater was treated, a big grey bird flew over and caught my attention. It landed in a lake nearby where I was standing, later to find out that it was a heron. Taking my camera out and walking closer to it slowly, the heron stood there and it seems to be looking for something. I took some shots and was about to leave when suddenly, the heron popped its head under the water and back up with a fish between its beak. I had never seen a heron catching a fish this close and decided to take some shots of it before it ate the fish in one big gulp.

Investigation: (noun) the action of investigating someone or something; examination or research. Although this is the true definition of investigation, it can mean so much more. It can mean to explore and discover something new. One could argue it could even mean to read a book, inspecting a new story with each turn of the page. Investigation can be interpreted hundreds of ways, and this photograph is just one of them. By using depth of field, one can portray entirely different meanings with the focus of a camera. In conclusion, investigation can be a wide range of ideas, but they all go back to the central exploration and examination theme, just like countless other feelings, expressions, ideas, and more.

This photo was taken with my subject (Nwar) reading a book under a tree at school. He is pondering the subject of the book, and investigating a new idea on astrophysics (which the book is based upon). He represents anyone who has a thirst of knowledge or to discover something new.

It was my first time at a tidal pool and the boys shared my excitement at all the different things that live in the rocks. We explored the pools, cracks and receding waves that held so much life to investigate. We found crabs, sea anenimes, star fish, ells, coral, mussels, snails, sea lions, and many things I don't know what they were. I had no idea how much life lives just below the water.

Once one catches a glimpse of something never seen before, it is impossible to erase the memory out of their head. Some choose to not bring it up ever again, while others become consumed by it. They dig deeper, in search of what they once saw. The light through the cracks draws everyone, but only some go closer...

This photograph was taken in the dark at night, and lights are surrounding the picture hidden and visible. There is a river flowing showing the power of nature and time. Trees also are on the ends of the river also showing what time and growth can do. I took my photograph at one of our local gardens, an enchanted forest. I was standing on a bridge looking across the river. My photograph relates to investigation because throughout life you are investigating. In the photograph you could be dark all alone, no where to go and no where to run too. We must always remember even in the darkest of times there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is a lot of symbolism in this photograph to me.

How might lights reach investigation?
Our Earth is in a solar system and our solar system is a star.
Ever heard of Aliens?
Who knows, maybe each star has a different world of living creatures.
Maybe not.
The world has theories of whether Aliens exist or not but it can't be proven... yet.
The only thing we can do now is guess.
Each light in the picture represents a star.
You can't see all the lights that were up in the picture, but we can't see all the stars from Earth either.
This picture was taken in my backyard under the stars, which is where I began to wonder of the other possible living creatures that are so close, yet so far away.

Photography is all about investigation...an object or an idea. I look around for clues or answers. It is also my method of research. It's about really looking!
I hope I'm not the only one investigating here. I hope you will look closely too, and have a question for me.

I used the 'toy camera' setting on the camera to take these photographs but no digital editing. (I DID darken my pic a little!

I think this is "Investigation" in two ways. I wanted the girl to be mysterious, looking through the dark, putting light onto things to illuminate and investigate them. The second way it is investigation is I wanted to investigate using a black light, neon paint and try using an extended exposure to create a really different image for this theme. It was taken in the schools little theater, we turned the lights out, hung a black light and my friend is the model.

When I took this photo, I was in my backyard. My photo relates to the theme "Investigation" because it shows how you need to look closely to see little details in the world around you, like this bee. I think that without investigating you would miss amazing moments.

I think of my photo as a comparison of times. Before the development of the phone and all of the new and crazy technology, kids would go outside when it’s 85 degrees with perfectly blue skies, instead of staying indoors to go play a video game. Nothing can beat such perfect weather. But now we tend to forget about what it was like before technology, when you would stay outside late at night playing hide and go seek or go explore nature with friends. Now as a society we see going on a phone or computer to be more fun. My photo investigates what it was like before technology - looking at a beautiful sunset and not worrying about a video game and just having fun in the outdoors.

This photo was taken on school campus in my science classroom and the flowers were taken in 2017 in a pumpkin patch. The idea behind this photo would have to be investigating different parts of the world; more specifically nature. The world is full of mystery in regards to both life and death and everything that comes in between. I chose to use a black background and then use the brighter colors in order to create contrast.

This photo was taken on a school field trip. I took about 100 photos on this trip but this one really stuck with me. It brought me back to a time when i was scared to talk to people so I would investigate how others interacted with each other to help me. This photo shows me hiding behind plants, looking at two people talking to each other.

I was skating with my friends in the park, and we had passed this sculpture of a tiny man a few times before we noticed it was even there. We had to investigate that it was there. I really enjoy photography and all forms of art, so thank you for judging my photo!

Physics and astronomy students from a college consortium in California mill around their cameras the night before the 2017 North American Solar Eclipse. They have flown for several hours to arrive at the campgrounds beneath the shadow of Mt. Hood, Oregon, where the eclipse totality will be fully visible. The clear night sky provided an opportunity to photograph the stars, and the students were quick to whip out their DSLR's, tripods, and star tracker mounts to capture images of deep space. They spent half the night constantly adjusting and aiming their equipment in order to better capture the ancient light of stars hundred of light years away. While humanity remains grounded upon our terrestrial home, far away from the unreachable stars, the thousands of photographers and amateur astronomers are our pioneer explorers and investigators into the depths of the universe.

I took this picture here at the school studio. I took this image just trying to express how we see investigation on TV. This image relates to investigation because my model was doing something that we don't always do. It shows how sometimes not everything can be seen with the normal human eye. That at times we need help to see things clearly. Doesn't matter if it's a pair of glasses, words, or even someone else, because at times in our lives we all need a little help to see things a Little Closer.

One day during history class I noticed a huge statue of King Tut’s tomb in the back of the classroom. From far away he looked smooth and flawless, but when I went up close to investigate him he had lots of details and layers! It looked like the layers might have been painted differently, sort of like the people who painted his tomb had made mistakes on some of the layers, so they put another layer on top of the other layers till they got it right. From a far it looked like the eyes and eyebrows on King Tut’s tomb were black, but from closeup it turned out they were brown. It looked as if around his eyes he was wearing eyeliner, then when you looked really closely he had also had an outline of something that looked like pencil around his eyes. I learned you really have to look closely at something or someone to notice all the details in them.

I wanted her to be looking for something or give the appearance of having heard something that she is investigating. I liked how the sunlight shined through the blinds onto my friends face and through her fingers. Also, how the light made her eye color pop.

I took this photograph in my living room. The walls were painted a light yellow so I used that as the background. One reason why this relates to the theme is one really the magnify glass and my brothers raised eyebrow, but really usually in movies or cartoons a lot of detective like characters do something like what my brother is doing in the photo. What I could have done to improve this photo is maybe I could've done something about the light on the top right or the smudges on the glass, but it really doesn't get in the way of the photo or my canvas.

Looking for Trouble

Trouble, trouble, she keeps getting caught
But, she can't stop
She won't stop till she gets what she wants
Mom is dead, and dad has left
And he's not coming back
She wants to stop but she can't
She wants to get revenge for the bad thing the world has done to her
she knows it bad
But, hungry in more ways than you think
She wants friends
She want's family to feel loved and safe

This photo was taken November 17, 2017 at the Enchanted Forest light show. This photo represents investigation because the model being backlit by colored lights and not being able to see her face creates a mysterious scene to this photo. It looks as if she is studying the area around her, or "investigating" the area around her.

This picture was taken because of my view of the intimidating and unknown world we live in today. Our world is constantly growing, and the only way to see how this is happening is to investigate and examine. I chose this photograph because it captures the beauty you would only find when looking up and looking for hidden details in the wide and vast space above. As you examine this photo, you will see that the photographer’s (me) current location isn’t close to where the top of the trees and plants are, rather, his position is below everything, including the small plants. This photo also makes you want to climb up and explore what is hidden and what is not seen from the photographer’s current location. In addition, the photograph also emphasizes leading lines, which draw the viewer’s attention up and through the tree’s branches. This can also relate to the mysterious and intimidating world because if we investigate and examine, we may be able to find a path that will bring us somewhere that is less intimidating and mysterious. Overall, the photograph is analogous of how the world is shaped today, and how most of us feel when looking up at its tremendous size.

My friend and I were searching for a new spot to hang around, be loud, and just overall be ourselves. We had been walking around a while when we came to this spot that overlooked almost the entire park we were walking around in. We decided to end our search in this spot as the sky was starting to light up with the setting sun but the ground was going dark with shadows. When searching for one thing, you can find another, like for example we wanted a spot to hang out but we ended up finding an outlook on the park, a place to look around and get bearings. We may not have found the spot we were looking for but we still found an important one. I think this is investigation because we were searching for a new location but ended but with something unexpected.

There is nothing more worthy of investigating than the oceans. The oceans cover well over 70 percent of the earth’s surface, yet, remarkably, only a mere 5 percent of it has been discovered. When I stumbled upon this fact as a child, it seized my imagination and instilled in me a lifelong commitment to investigating unknowns. I use photography as a flashlight. This photo that I took at Newport Beach is a summary of my life endeavours. To recapture my fantasies as a child, I set up a long exposure and asked my friend to gaze deep into the horizon. But suddenly, a series of strong tides filled the scene, creating a photo I never even hoped to conceive. Indeed, the silkyness of the water reminded me why I fell in love with the oceans in the first place.

By shooting before the sunset, I eliminated distractions. I didn’t want the clouds to be the subject. I didn’t want the sun to be the subject. No, I wanted the grandeur of the ocean to speak for itself and inspire others to go out and investigate, just as it has done for me.

The photo I decided to take was of a skull in a laboratory. While the skull was being examined by professionals I was able to capture an image that encompasses the theme of investigation because it shows craniometry or the measuring of skulls with the goal of figuring out things such as ancestry, population distances and sex. All of those things of course being figured out by the investigation of the skull itself. As for the name of the photo I believe this helps the viewer understand what is going on by linking it to one of the most important discoveries made by modern scientists and that is finding the first human skull and skeleton of who was later named Lucy.

This photo was taken outside in natural lighting. Taken outside of the photographers home on a white sheet of paper. With the use of paint, the hand prints had been created. With a steady hand, one hand was holding the magnifying glass while the other was taking the photo. My family was searching for something fun to do as Thanksgiving break came to an end. My mom suggested we go to a science museum that was right by a pier and an airport. The museum was very interesting because, besides the science exhibits, there were also animals and gardens. We walked through the museum, amazed by the science behind sound, motion, sight, and so much more. As we were about to leave the museum, we came across this interesting mirror exhibit that allowed the viewers to investigate the results of a setup of two mirrors that were side-by-side. When you looked into one of the mirrors, it would reflect the things in front and behind you, forming a dreamy, unrealistic photo. Out of all the photos I took from the museum, this photo was one of my favorites because it felt so unreal and it was one of the final exhibits we visited during our investigative day at the museum.

The photo that I chose to use is a picture that I took at a mall of a man and a woman who are looking through a couple of boxes. Although the editing takes away the focus from the couple, I did so because I felt it would create a bigger emphasis on what they are searching for.

While trying to capture the stories of the residents of the Montecito mudslide, I came across this house. In the debris pile in the foreground you can see how raging forces of Mother Nature can overturn a car and rip it to shreds making it barely recognizable. The entangled mess includes guard rails, pieces of people's homes, and large rocks. I edited the photo to be black and white to fully put the emphasis on the house in the background where you can clearly see how high the mud rose. Despite the enormous devastation there are signs of optimism with the owners of this badly damaged home writing "Thank you everyone! We love you."
