I took this picture using an iPhone 8 plus. It was at one of my softball games, and we were in a huddle saying a prayer before going out to start our intense game. I edited this on Photoshop that was downloaded on our school computers. This picture was cropped because there was lots of extra space left and it was also brightened up.

I think that this photo ties in with the theme "participation" because it has multiple people in a small huddle. The people are participating in a small group to pray before their very intense games. I also think it ties in with participation because they're putting themselves into a position to talk and involve in a group effort.

Upon my second visit to Tecate, Mexico, I came across a group of local kids playing soccer with one another. While watching their game, I noticed that the players’ approach to participating in the game deviated from the norm. As opposed to playing purely to win, the kids were coming together as a means of having fun and finding common ground. Consequently, they were creating a sense of community among themselves–when a player on the other team fell, a player from another team would eagerly help them up, despite the differing color of their jersey. By simply witnessing this soccer game, I learned that through participating in events such as these, we develop our abilities to work with others while also partaking in an experience that is fulfilling.

Since first discovering photography at age 11, I’ve been entranced by the communicative power that photographs have. In the past couple of years, I’ve been most drawn to documentary photography, specifically missions’ photography. While on a mission trip in the summer of 2017, I had the opportunity to photograph my group’s outreach and capture the love that was being poured out onto the children at the orphanage. This genre of photography not only carries immense emotion, but displays the transformational power of the Gospel.

This is a picture of a team that I saw after my game the other night. I was walking out of the field that my team was playing at, and I saw the team in a huddle saying a chant. I thought this was a great time to take the photo because everyone was participating in saying the chant and no one looked like they were too cool to say it. Normally there would be at least one kid who would try and act cool and not participate in something like a chant or huddle, but this team was loud and everyone was into it.

The definition of participate, according to the Oxford dictionary is “take part”. Participation to me is similar to the Oxford definition, but more refined as opposed to the broad definition. To me, it means being part of something bigger than yourself. Something that doesn’t only include you, but is dependent on your effort. Participation is a part of my life in my volleyball team, I have thirteen teammates and each of us have our own role on the team. Featured in this photo is one of my team’s setters, Isla. She and our other setter, Sadie, are vital to the team. Everyone on our team has their own roles, and without everybody’s efforts and participation we wouldn’t be the team we are today.

This photo was taken during soccer practice. The team can either choose to practice alone or practice as a team, and that's what they chose. They chose to participate and work together to help each other improve their skills. Because they all work so well together and treat each other like family, they win almost every game they play. They are very successful as a team because they choose to participate and help each other.

When I took this photo, I was in my mom's classroom. I know that this may not be the best quality, but through all that grain you can see the collaboration. My photo relates to the theme "Participate," because it shows the viewer that working together, you can accomplish your goals faster. As Phil Jackson once said, "The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team."

I believe there is no greater act of participation in life than cultivating relationships. Allow me to tell you a story about one important relationship that was cultivated right here on this bench. Throughout my life, my number one fan was always my granddad. He supported me in every aspect of my life, between sports games, musical performances, birthdays and special events. He was always there. His love for me was unconditional, and growing up I never realized how special our relationship was. As I grew older, one of his favorite things to do when I would visit was to sit on this bench and tell me stories. We would talk about what was going on in our lives, and he loved to tell me stories of his days in the United States Army during World War 2, which were particularly fascinating. Sitting on this bench I came to appreciate my granddad for the incredible person he was, simply through conversation. In the last few years of his life he suffered from Alzheimer's. Conversations became difficult and frustrating for him, and for me it was devastating to let go of that part of our connection. I took this photo just a few days ago as I did a final walk through my grandparents house before it was sold. It was one of the most significant photos I took that day, because it symbolized years of stories, laughs and love from my granddad.

This photo means a lot to me. It relates to the theme because the photograph shows my dad and the player are participating in a football game. Football has showed me that my dad has an amazing trait called perseverance. Even if the team is not good or the plays they made weren’t thought out, he still sticks with the team no matter what. In conclusion, my dad has taught me to persevere through thick and thin situations.

The theme of “participate” is, to me, not just a reminder of the power of participation, nor just a call to participate. I also took it as a call to remember those among us who are discouraged, rather than encouraged, to participate in the culture and day-to-day lives that the rest of us take for granted—those who are neglected and cast aside, the people who fill in the gaps. I took this picture in London this past December because the woman in the center caught my eye. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, she was sweetly and serenely feeding pigeons and playing her harmonica. Despite being unable to participate in the activity of the city, she made her small corner of it beautiful.

This photo was taken in my living room on a tripod with the camera was on a timer. My sister and I like to play video games.

This picture is about participating in the game of baseball. Everyone has a job on the field. It is important so a team could win the game. Baseball is one of my passions.
