For this year's CaliforniaStreaming photo contest, the theme is participation. Last month or so my family and I went up to the mountains. It had just rained and there was a lot of snow, so my family decided to build a snowman. They all participated in building the snowman and I started taking pictures. They all really enjoyed making it together and really enjoyed capturing the moment.
Building a Snowman

I took this photo when my family and I went to view the King Tut exhibit at the California Science Center. I chose this photo because it shows my little brother, Nevan, participating in a hands-on exhibit offered there. He was making a tall tower out of Tinkertoys. He was now part of the shared activity that other visitors built on. Each participant would keep adding and changing the shape of the toys as the day went on. I liked that he was participating in an activity that was shared with so many other people. Museums are a great place for people from all over the world to participate in fun activities.

Every year, more than five thousand delegates from all different locations come together at our state capitol, Sacramento, to come and express their ideas and debate against one another. The people who choose to participate here can influence great change to our country through their beliefs. The people who participate here are the change. Participating is change. Because of participation, we are able to have the privileges we have today.

This photo was taken at my house. It shows participation because my cat participated in the art of stealing and eating more food than she normally gets. She managed to knock over the lid of the container of food and she stole food.

Participation, the act of being a part of something. On February 5, my family and I decided to drive to Chinatown, where people of different ethnicities gathered in celebration of the Year of the Pig. I took this picture as everyone all counted down to fire their confetti bomb. It was truly a beautiful moment when the confetti was in the sky. This event allowed children as little as three to take part in. One kid I noticed in particular, used all his strength to let the bomb explode. However, after numerous failed attempts, his father came in and helped him fire it.
The key element is that everyone played a role, and it didn’t matter whether or not it was a small role or a big role. The fact that everyone did it together was the most important part. Even though I wasn’t physically firing the confetti bomb with my own hands, I felt the love and compassion everyone had as a whole community.

This is a picture of the inside of our Christmas tree. My mom, dad, auntie, uncle and cousin spent all day in the mountains looking for the perfect tree. My dad cut down the tree. We took it home and decorated it for Christmas. We all participated in nature and brought home the perfect tree.
