I took this photo in the heart of downtown. I had just come from participating in a annual stair climb that is held each year. On my way back to the parking lot, I couldn’t help but notice the extremely beautiful, yet calm view of the streets. You can tell it’s crowded, yet I felt so at ease just staring into the seemingly endless roads. It gives off a sort of vibe that just says “you did it, now enjoy the view.”

Everyday, while I do my daily activities, I notice participation all around me. People of all ages, backgrounds, and beliefs can be found participating in dozens of activities every single day. California County Educational Technology Consortium defines participation as, “to be involved in doing something or to take part in an activity or event.” While I agree with CCETC’s definition of participation, I think that it is important to not only do a certain task, but to put effort into and enjoy yourself while completing the task. In this picture, the girls participate in playing with and training Rocky, the dog. While they put effort in working with Rocky, they enjoy spending time with each other while doing so.

Rose Avenue, a high school band posing for a group photo. This picture was taken in a friends garage/practice room on a Sunday night. It exemplifies how the creation of art brings people together and allows everyone surrounding the music to participate. Whether that's through playing music or simply listening, everyone is involved in something great. Many students feel so overwhelmed with academics and the ambiguities of the future, but capturing moments like these allows us all to take a break from our busy lives and participate in the creation of art.

This photo was taken on the the tracks around the football field. This picture is of hardworking track students. These students are practicing in gloomy weather, advancing their skills. My photograph relates to the theme because various kids are participating in this activity.

This photo depicts a physical education student working hard to finish her mile run under the cloudy skies on the track. She was participating in the class by attempting to jog with the other students. This was taken today in the morning.

A lone sheep is a target,
Quick to be claimed by a larger beast,
but when they come together they create safety of the flock,
The choir of lambs work to save one another.
Together, they strive to become bigger than themselves

While a flock of sheep can have many different symbolic interpretations, I like the idea of them working and participating to protect one another. In this photo, you can see the sheep in the foreground eyeing me down cautiously. Shortly after this, he called to the others in warning and they all moved away. I find that if people had more of this quality - this urge to protect one another - the world would be a safer and better place. This photo was taken in Rhossili, Wales in December of 2018. Taken with a Canon 80D.

This image was taken in the quad area of my school just after lunch as you can see. This image relates to this year's theme, participate, because it shows the seagulls looking all the same way

This photo was taken while I was watching monkeys in Tanzania pick up bananas and munch on them. I visited Tanzania over the summer to volunteer at local schools in order to help make the environment more pleasant. As a society, we need to come together and participate in saving our beautiful animals, their habitats, and our amazing planet. Due to climate change, deforestation, and poaching, our planet is changing for the worst. One day, there will be no monkeys left and no one will know they even existed; this is such a scary thing to think about. We live on such a beautiful planet. We need to participate by coming together to save our beautiful Earth.

My dad's family comes from the small village of Peniche, Portugal. It's so small that it is often overlooked by tourists and even those who reside in the country themselves. I visited this hidden village for the first time in August of last year. Coming from the city, I was shocked to see how tranquil and old-fashioned this town had remained. It was quite literally a nice change of scenery. I guess that’s why I took this picture. I wanted to feel like I was somehow a part of this little town. I wanted to immerse myself in my Portuguese heritage, that I never got to truly experience growing up. So I set up my tripod, sat myself on the edge of the ledge, and just watched the waves crashing below.

Throughout time, everyone is always searching for the light, but you never hear about someone searching for the darkness. That's what I want to encapsulate in my photos.

Photography can be a getaway from society. In this image, my friend is capturing the beautiful night lights. By participating in his hobby, he is able to feel physically and mentally free in the moment. A time where he can forget about the challenges life brings his way, and adore the beauty of the earth from a perspective you don't see every day. Sometimes, we let our stresses get the best of us and get caught up with work. But what we don’t realize is that mental freedom awaits just minutes away. No matter where you live, photography is there, ready for you to take part in the movement.
