This photo was taken in the quad of my school. It's where most of the student population can be found at lunch, and there is always something interesting happening. It seemed like a good place to take a photo with the theme of participation, because even though my school is very welcoming and inclusive, there are always some people standing apart and watching life pass them by.
Knowing this, the story behind the photo is that a person separate from the rest of the school is being invited to join their peers. We wanted to give ourselves the best shot we could at obtaining a good grade, so we decided to participate in a group study session so we could collaborate with our other peers. I noticed that there were a bunch of ants on our front porch. Someone had left crumbs of cheese popcorn there. I chose this photo because it shows that the ants are participating together in preparing for winter. My photo shows a part of a long line of ants that were collecting the crumbs. Ants also participate in keeping the environment clean. They participate by eating off of dead leaves, insects, and animals. Ants are great at participating for themselves and for nature.

This is my cousin Adair at a Quinceanera. Adair has Downs syndrome. He participates in everything with everyone else and is never excluded. He loves music and plays with the other musicians. Anything is possible when you are included and decide to participate.

We decided to get outdoors and play one of her favorite games; she ended up winning. We had so much fun playing that we decided to play another round. I took several pictures, and with a bit of editing, I chose this one as my favorite.
When I went to the Santa Monica Pier, I was pleased to find so many different people engaging with their surroundings. Everywhere I looked people were participating in different activities from flying a kite to fishing off the pier to blowing bubbles. It was so fulfilling just standing on the pier and capturing the activities of the lively people with my camera.

This picture is significant to me because I view my extended family like this asparagus. We always are busy with school, work, and other things that get in the way. But on Thanksgiving, we are bound together. I captured this picture to represent the black and white truth of our situation.

The photo was taken on opening day for the baseball league. My photo relates to the theme of "participation" by showing both the pitcher and the batter of the opposing team. I tried to capture the moment just after the batter connected with the ball. I moved right up to the chain-link fence so the links would not show up in the photograph.

The photo was taken on a boat tour (from the boat) in Paris, France. It relates to the 'Participate' theme because the photo was taken in an effort to participate in a separate local school photo contest back home. It worked out well and so I have decided to use that same photo for this contest.
