This photo was taken November 17, 2017 at the Enchanted Forest light show. This photo represents investigation because the model being backlit by colored lights and not being able to see her face creates a mysterious scene to this photo. It looks as if she is studying the area around her, or "investigating" the area around her.

This picture was taken because of my view of the intimidating and unknown world we live in today. Our world is constantly growing, and the only way to see how this is happening is to investigate and examine. I chose this photograph because it captures the beauty you would only find when looking up and looking for hidden details in the wide and vast space above. As you examine this photo, you will see that the photographer’s (me) current location isn’t close to where the top of the trees and plants are, rather, his position is below everything, including the small plants. This photo also makes you want to climb up and explore what is hidden and what is not seen from the photographer’s current location. In addition, the photograph also emphasizes leading lines, which draw the viewer’s attention up and through the tree’s branches. This can also relate to the mysterious and intimidating world because if we investigate and examine, we may be able to find a path that will bring us somewhere that is less intimidating and mysterious. Overall, the photograph is analogous of how the world is shaped today, and how most of us feel when looking up at its tremendous size.

My friend and I were searching for a new spot to hang around, be loud, and just overall be ourselves. We had been walking around a while when we came to this spot that overlooked almost the entire park we were walking around in. We decided to end our search in this spot as the sky was starting to light up with the setting sun but the ground was going dark with shadows. When searching for one thing, you can find another, like for example we wanted a spot to hang out but we ended up finding an outlook on the park, a place to look around and get bearings. We may not have found the spot we were looking for but we still found an important one. I think this is investigation because we were searching for a new location but ended but with something unexpected.

There is nothing more worthy of investigating than the oceans. The oceans cover well over 70 percent of the earth’s surface, yet, remarkably, only a mere 5 percent of it has been discovered. When I stumbled upon this fact as a child, it seized my imagination and instilled in me a lifelong commitment to investigating unknowns. I use photography as a flashlight. This photo that I took at Newport Beach is a summary of my life endeavours. To recapture my fantasies as a child, I set up a long exposure and asked my friend to gaze deep into the horizon. But suddenly, a series of strong tides filled the scene, creating a photo I never even hoped to conceive. Indeed, the silkyness of the water reminded me why I fell in love with the oceans in the first place.

By shooting before the sunset, I eliminated distractions. I didn’t want the clouds to be the subject. I didn’t want the sun to be the subject. No, I wanted the grandeur of the ocean to speak for itself and inspire others to go out and investigate, just as it has done for me.
Honorable Mention
The photo I decided to take was of a skull in a laboratory. While the skull was being examined by professionals I was able to capture an image that encompasses the theme of investigation because it shows craniometry or the measuring of skulls with the goal of figuring out things such as ancestry, population distances and sex. All of those things of course being figured out by the investigation of the skull itself. As for the name of the photo I believe this helps the viewer understand what is going on by linking it to one of the most important discoveries made by modern scientists and that is finding the first human skull and skeleton of who was later named Lucy.
Honorable Mention
This was taken during the Lunar New Year Festival. This relates to the theme as I was investigating the lantern's details.
Honorable Mention
I took this photo in the media room of my high school. This photo meets the theme of investigation because it appears very surreal and unknown. I personally believe that it is up to us to investigate what we are unfamiliar with. Doing this helps to inspire more investigations in the future.
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken outside in natural lighting. Taken outside of the photographers home on a white sheet of paper. With the use of paint, the hand prints had been created. With a steady hand, one hand was holding the magnifying glass while the other was taking the photo. This photo relates to this years theme of investigation because the person holding the magnifying glass is looking into the hand print of the individual.

My family was searching for something fun to do as Thanksgiving break came to an end. My mom suggested we go to a science museum that was right by a pier and an airport. The museum was very interesting because, besides the science exhibits, there were also animals and gardens. We walked through the museum, amazed by the science behind sound, motion, sight, and so much more. As we were about to leave the museum, we came across this interesting mirror exhibit that allowed the viewers to investigate the results of a setup of two mirrors that were side-by-side. When you looked into one of the mirrors, it would reflect the things in front and behind you, forming a dreamy, unrealistic photo. Out of all the photos I took from the museum, this photo was one of my favorites because it felt so unreal and it was one of the final exhibits we visited during our investigative day at the museum.
Honorable Mention
The photo that I chose to use is a picture that I took at a mall of a man and a woman who are looking through a couple of boxes. Although the editing takes away the focus from the couple, I did so because I felt it would create a bigger emphasis on what they are searching for.
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken early in the morning after a hike by the coast. It was cold and misty and a clearing in the trees revealed the powerful waves crashing into the rocky coast. This was taken in Gualala, California.
Honorable Mention
This photograph was taken just after twilight, as the sun was still saying its last goodbyes to the mountains on a brisk Southern Californian day. I was looking to capture the moment when the moon takes over the sky and the stars begin to spill across the horizon. The telescope is a way for us to investigate the moon and stars. As a child I spent many chilly nights bundled up waiting for this moment, for the sun to sink down over the horizon and the stars and the moon to begin to fill the sky with color and light. I spent many hours just laying under the stars as my dad took out his telescope to investigate the vast universe that was set before us.

While trying to capture the stories of the residents of the Montecito mudslide, I came across this house. In the debris pile in the foreground you can see how raging forces of Mother Nature can overturn a car and rip it to shreds making it barely recognizable. The entangled mess includes guard rails, pieces of people's homes, and large rocks. I edited the photo to be black and white to fully put the emphasis on the house in the background where you can clearly see how high the mud rose. Despite the enormous devastation there are signs of optimism with the owners of this badly damaged home writing "Thank you everyone! We love you."

6:45 AM in the Madera Ranchos; a small community between Fresno and Madera. Two days of planning went into the photo. I had a distinct image for what I wanted. I came up with the idea in fairly straight forward manner. I closed my eyes and imagined what came to mind when I thought - "Investigation". I imagined a person standing in the dark beneath a streetlight wearing a trench coat and taking notes of their surroundings. Then I wanted a scene for the detective character to looking at. I decided to take fake blood and create a murder scene of sorts on the streetlight. The photo was taken at dawn. The violet-blue of the early morning sky contrasted well with the vibrancy of the blood. A mounted flash with a blue jell to create the light on one side. Initially I was just experimenting with the colored flashes. I liking how they added a bit of intrigue to the photo, resembling the light of the moon or maybe the flashing of police lights.
Honorable Mention
I chose this photo for the theme investigation because it is from an angle where she looks down from the balcony in the dark view which makes it look like mystery. It makes it look like she is investigating what is going on down there.
Honorable Mention
This is a very focused picture of Mary because she is a mystery of faith. This photo relates to investigation because its a mystery of faith. Each of us have our own path of faith that we are on. We will one day find each of our mysteries and see are long path of faith. I want the judges to know that I thought outside the box and took time to think about my photo.
Honorable Mention
I was at my house when I took this photo. I was zooming in as I took a variety of photos of things in my back yard. When I took this photo, I liked the design and color that showed in this photo.
Honorable Mention
I was walking by the field when I came upon a ladybug, I thought it was a beautiful sight to see.
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken when I was on a field trip. Although all you see is the nature in California, you may know why they’re there, why animals live in them, why it’s important for us. But there is no correct answer.
Even if we don't know the correct answer to why all we see is nature here in California or even around the world, we may all take time to go outside or search online and investigate about it.
Honorable Mention
When walking around in Old Town Pasadena one can’t help but notice the nature around them and how it contrasts to the rest of the city. In this picture a person is investigating this leaf and wondering how the environment impacts the world and those in it.
Honorable Mention
My photo portrays the aftermath of the wildfires that have been devastating California as of recently. The fires have destroyed a multitude of homes, acres of land, and the homes of many animals. I made my main focal point the growth of a new plant amongst all the burnt remains because I feel that it portrays that there’s hope of regrowth.
Honorable Mention
I took this photo because I wanted to investigate how the sun would look for the first time of the new year since the sun sets differently each day. Investigating this sunset made me realize that since it was the start of a new year that I need to better myself. This photograph is a crisp, clear image of a natural beauty.

The news media were investigating a rally to bring attention and support for labor workers in America. It was near the farmers market in San Francisco. They were investigating the truth from the people at the gathering. It is my first time seeing a protest. I like the quote on the woman shirt, "All that harms labor is treason to America," Abraham Lincoln.
Honorable Mention
I was outside by the lunch area in my school and I couldn’t help but notice that right in between my friends feet was a puddle. In that the puddle was the reflection of the lunch table. Together with her shoes, this just gave the photo so much more “character’’. In this image, I think I got a good angle for the picture.
Honorable Mention
This was my first time on a boat in the middle of the ocean. I was learning about the current, the weather, and how to operate a boat in the water. I was curious about the animals and wildlife in the ocean. I was able to see some dolphins, but only the top part of their bodies. They soon jumped out of the water. So, in a way, I was investigating about different things in the ocean. I was enjoying my first time on a boat and being completely by myself in the ocean. Although I was with my uncle, I still felt by myself, since I was only surrounded by water. It was like an investigation because I got to investigate by myself, how to use certain things on a boat, and where to look for animals.
Honorable Mention
During a day trip with my family, we had stopped to eat at a restaurant by the water. That's where we found this small pier, and where this photo was taken. The pier had overlooked a sandy beach full of colorful people enjoying the sunny cloudless day. My niece ran down the wood planks, leaned over and looked out over the railing. I saw her searching through the people and taking in the scene. As her eyes closed I imagined she could hear the noises of seagulls, people, and waves and feel the ocean breeze on her face. Farther down the pier stood my father looking out seeing the same thing through aged eyes. As they both looked out investigating different people and the activities on the beach, they were unknowingly using their own unique wisdom and experiences to analyze the beach down below. My niece who had never seen this place before looked on with an unbiased amazement, while for my father this place brought back memories of the years past. In this photo, I see Investigation in the way these people viewed the world in front of them.
Honorable Mention
You may have heard of the word “Investigation,” but do you actually know what it means? Investigation can be when a person studies someone or something. It’s kind of like doing research on a living thing. Sometimes you will see or hear of a cop or a detective investigating, but any type of person can look into a mystery. In my photo, this ordinary little girl is investigating a panda that she found hurt. She is using a magnifying lens to check the female panda for bruises and cuts. She wants to make sure the panda is safe and healthy. Investigating a wild animal in your backyard can be tough, but it is also exciting. Investigation is an important source for us humans. It is through investigation that we can learn about the things we find around us.

The photo captures the long trek forward into life, while investigating what lies ahead. The lights represent the uncertainty that the future holds, and how we have to continue forward even if we are afraid of the uncertainty that lies ahead. The color purple is associated with spirituality, the sacred, higher self, passion, third eye, fulfillment, and vitality. Purple helps align oneself with the whole of the universe. In this photo it demonstrates even though we do not have full control over our fates, and no matter how bad our situation is, everything will work out and conditions will improve.
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken in a Metro Subway Station underground. This photo relates to investigation because the picture is separated between light and darkness and the subway hole looks really menacing with its twists and turns which leads to people on the light side peering into the hole investigating. Also, the hole is black which gives off a mysterious and unknown vibe to it leading to the people on the light side to investigate it. This is how the photo relates to this year's contests theme which is investigation. Basically, this is related to investigation because the tunnel is giving off an eerie feeling and the people on the light side is investigating and peering into the tunnel to investigate the mysterious tunnel.
Honorable Mention
I took this picture in the balcony of my apartment which has a perfect view of the California sunsets with pink skies. Unfortunately the sky wasn’t pink the day I took this picture it was just only a bit orange. The magnifying glass symbolizes investigation. When you investigate you look at the world in a different way and I think that is represented well by the upside down image inside the magnifying glass.
Honorable Mention
Seeing things through a different lens.
If for only a moment, everyone in the world would a take a step back and investigate their surroundings differently than how they always do. Oh how different the world would be. We would be seeing things we never had seen before, just by investigating and exploring with a different mindset, vision, and perspective. Even looking through a pair of sunglasses differently can completely change your view and perspective on what you were investigating.
Honorable Mention
When I think of the word "Investigation", the first few words I think of are "mystery", "enigma", and "unusual". The word "Investigations" reminds of the famous T.V. show "Scooby-Doo" and the famous movie "Ghost Busters". The photo was taken in a dark room, which provides an eerie atmosphere. On top of that, the multiple layers of the cube give a ghost effect on the cube. It's like the only source of light in the dark room is this phantom or ghost in the room. Investigation is also also piecing each piece of the puzzle together. In this photo, the people's eyes will start at the middle cube, and follow along the outside layers as the cube becomes less and less tangible.

This picture was about investigating life at another point of view. It shows how insects and other small life forms see the world. Everything looks so much bigger when your looking through a smaller point of view. At a smaller point of view you can see the smallest things like plants and tiny rocks. This opened my eyes to see the world in another way.
Honorable Mention
When it came time to decide what I was going to photograph, I went to a collection of figures in my living room. Searching for the perfect one, I found a small man that sat upon a stool pondering of what’s to come. He looks upward looking for the answer. Thinking and investigating everything that was around him.
Honorable Mention
Investigating low tide on the beach was like walking through the primordial soup that started life. I live in the mountains and did not realize how interactive and delicate life was in the ocean. For me this was a surprise experience that had me on my hands and knees investigating every crack and crevice.
Honorable Mention
I saw this raindrop and then saw the reflection. Looking closer I saw many reflections. Some reflections were bright and beautiful but some were dark, just like people. Each drop was unique.
Honorable Mention
I'm investigating the changing light as much as I'm investigating any specific subject. The way the photo feels is more important than what it is. Photography and Investigation are synonymous.
Honorable Mention
This picture was inspired by the Smurfs movies. The little mushroom-like house stands for the unusual and lovable smurfs. In the movie, there are two types of people who interact with the Smurfs. People like Gargamel and people like Grace and Patrick. Gargamel tries to destroy the Smurfs’ civilization and use their kind for spells for his own benefit. While, Patrick and Grace want to help save the Smurfs from Gargamel and get home. When you look at this picture, there is a boy inspecting the little house. What will he find? How will he react? Will he be kind like Grace or evil like Gargamel? How would you react?

I was curious about how plastic bottles were recycled. The process of how the bottles went from place to place seemed very confusing. Then my mom and I watched a video to investigate the process of recycling. Watching the video, I learned how the plastic was forged and formed after once being washed, heated and reshaped. The video showed me the life cycle of the water bottle. New recycled water bottles are not the only thing made from recycled plastics, but they are one of the most important. Many other products are made from recycled plastics, such as sweaters, shirts, cushion filling, blankets, all the way to car parts. What the video didn’t show me was how creative you can be with recycled water bottles. I chose a recycled water bottle as the subject of my picture because many people don’t know how creative you can be with recycled water bottles.

This photo was taken at Zion National Park in Utah. This photo relates to this years contest theme "Investigation" because it shows those that are looking at something different. Some are looking up at the the top where the opening is. Some are looking down and they are all looking at different things. Something I would really like for you to focus on is the detail this picture has. Each person is kinda of telling there own story in what they are looking at.

Investigating Red Rock Canyon

This picture shows my sister and dad walking on a trail. There aren’t many green plants or flowers growing around this path. If you look closely the plants have some green on them, but are mostly dried up. Why would they want to investigate this area? These canyons have an interesting characteristic. The red rocks are so amazing to see around this desert area near Las Vegas. It’s hard to ignore, and so many people want to see this up close.

There are moments where the world around us seems surreal and like a dream. No matter how fake our world may seem, if we take a moment to really look around us and take everything in, we can see past all the negativity in the world today and recognize the natural beauty. I created the reflection because of the idea that while investigating ourselves, we discover what we think about the world and those feelings reflect into our perception of how we actually see the world. For instance, if we recognize that the world is truly beautiful, we will see beauty in everything. This is how my photo represents investigation. I took the foreground photo while I was in Utah and added my photo of Downtown Los Angeles as the background using Photoshop. I also painted the galaxy with Photoshop as well. I would like to let you know that while the photo is clearly heavily Photoshopped, that is the point, as I am trying to emphasize how sometimes our world’s beauty feels fake at times and through investigation of the world around us, we can finally accept its true beauty.

I took this photograph in my home during the holiday season. Taking this photograph, I investigated how families celebrate a fellow family member's first rite of passage. For example, in this photograph it was the baby's first Christmas This is a monumental moment because the baby is celebrating the joy of a family gathering together to celebrate a religious holiday for the first time. Overall anyone's first rite of passages for anything are important milestones because it is the person experiencing something for the first time that can influence their life.
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken on a cloudy and foggy day in 2017. The sky was very dull and had almost no color. I thought the background was very interesting, since we usually only get sunny weather in California. I started taking photos of everything I saw. But, when I came across a lamp post, I was puzzled because I didn’t know how to photograph it to make it interesting. So, I started investigating the different angles that could make the lamp post look cool and mysterious. I wanted to make it look like something more than just what it was. I decided to get my camera really close to the lamp post and take a few photos, which is how I ended up with the photo that I have.
Honorable Mention
This is a picture of me investigating what stuffed animals do at night. I chose this picture because I always wonder if they can come to life when I am sleeping. In this picture, Rudolph is looking for a friend to play with and sees something on the door!
Honorable Mention
All of the photographs were taken at school, during school hours.
I was inspired by mystery and murder shows and anime that I have watched throughout the years, inspired by anime such as "Detective Conan" AKA "Case Closed" and Psycho-Pass. I was also inspired by Sherlock Holmes, cliché yes, but brilliant. All influencing me to create this piece.
This Photograph(s) relate to the theme "Investigation", as you can see that the male is looking for something as well as the eye who could be looking for something within time. I wanted people to be curious about what he was looking for or the crime that was committed, but clearly wanting to show that time was limited. I wanted people to come up with their own story for the investigation; What crime was committed? What is he looking for? Why is there a clock? etc.

I want the judges to know, if they didn't already, to use their imagination and think of an alternate world where this could be happening. I would like the judges to see how many different ways it could be viewed. I would also like to know, if I can, the story(s) they came up with if they did. Thank you and have a nice day.

I took this photo because I like the vibes it gave me. It made me feel like I was a diver exploring the natural wonders of the sea. To me, it felt like I could analyze all the little organisms, such as the fish, plants, and micro organisms I can’t see. It also overwhelmed me with a feel of being adventurous and open to new things I have yet to experience.
Honorable Mention
I was having a school field trip where I got lost in the wonders of marine life. This photo relates to the theme because I was investigating the astounding beauty of aquatic life as I tried to understand the animals more. I think it's important to investigate the ocean and their residents because the ocean covers 71% of the world. Therefore, I find it essential that we understand our fellow marine neighbors so we could live in harmony. In addition, it would help us find new ways to live so we do not create any more harm to the ecosystem that can affect them negatively. Which led me to take a picture of a sea turtle as they are an endangered species which should be more wildly known so we can work together to find a solution to this increasing problem. I was with really close friends enjoying the few remaining moments we would be able to enjoy a amusement park together before we got busy and branched out in different directions searching for our meaning in life. I used photoshop camera raw filter to bring up the vibrance of the picture to highlight the turtle swimming in the water.
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken in southwestern Utah with Zion National Parks sandstone cliffs in the background. The subject in this photo paused in his search to contemplate what path to take in order to investigate his surroundings. The beautiful outdoors presented many choices in which to investigate. To the right, a river was rushing by, to the front was a striking cliff, and in the distance a road could be heard. Which path would be the best choice to investigate the great outdoors?
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken of a real friend of mine at the beach. I think it relates to the theme because this friend would always go to the ocean when she needed to reflect on herself while she was growing up. The ocean is such a place of investigation, not only self, but also nature.

I took this image while my friend and I were wandering down the hallway of a sewer system near our school. We had walked by this sewer hundreds of times, but had never stopped to truly explore it. Our decision to take a deeper look was inspired by the theme of this contest; we wanted to see and investigate what we could find in this tunnel. As soon as we took our first steps down the hallway, we were immediately assaulted by the humid damp air and the foreboding stretch of tunnel ahead. We wanted to find out what lay on the other side of this stretch of concrete, but the further we traveled the darker it got. Eventually the only light we could see was the light from our flashlights. Nevertheless, we kept walking, hoping that we would find something in the darkness. Eventually, we saw a glimmer of light coming from the other side of the tunnel and we raced towards it until we were confronted with gold rays of sun and the wind against our faces.

I believe this piece symbolically shows what happens when people have the fortitude to push past perceived obstacles and continue down the path in which the outcome is unclear. We wanted to leave and we didn't know what was around us, nevertheless we endured and we were rewarded with the beauty that laid hidden on the other side. Through this photo, I was able to capture a moment in time depicting what exploration and investigation means to me.
Honorable Mention
I investigate nature and I investigate light. The light may be from the sun or from somewhere else. I love the way the mixed light looks. I often shoot the same subject with a variety of light. I'll look at all the different attempts later and decide which I like best.

The photo was not manipulated but was cropped slightly.

The following is a poem that describes how I feel about this particular photograph and the themes associated with it.

Shades of Color:

The Shades of Color— The Shades of Existence
They press a question of immediate insistence

But I shall forever ponder with answers irresolute
For I know not who grants me the feeling of pain so acute

Pain granted by unknown assistance
Perhaps by a great bearded man of holy consistence—

Yet still I know not how to address this pain
Of life which holds as entropically as skein

But it is not life which causes the agony
Rather its unknown who plays my antagony

For my place in the cosmos is perchance naught
And such a notion produces frivolous thought—-

Of absence of feeling and reason
Of no tomorrow for no particular encheason

Of eternal darkness and loss of life
Of even this somber feeling being nevermore rife

Of many things but not I
Of many things wearing to nonentity and no I—

And here I am consumed by purpose
Whose details presented are wordless

And here I stand by the stars
Who care not about my bleak memoirs

And here I am in awe with their hues
Who probe me with their dim pretty blues—

So I begin to forget about petty anguish
Of fevers and crisis that made me languish

Instead I focus on the unwavering colors
They who fill me with emotion and no unwarranted troubles

Who provide me unconditional comfort
And simplicity devoid of complexities encumbered—

Perhaps a part of me shall be endlessly stoic
As I stare at colors from sources dichroic

For I know not the meaning of life
An endeavour nevermore my strife

Due to the beautiful colors that’ve left me uncumbered
Because of their many shades of charm unnumbered—

Thus maybe I have solved the arduous investigation
Whose answer is plain yet causes elation

Care not about what is there when you are not
Care only for the time which you have to allot

Forget about ceaseless darkness and death

Only focus on the Shades of Color.

This picture was taken right after the bottle shattered. This piece of art relates to "Investigation" because the people in the background are investigating why the bottle broke, but won't really care enough to actually pick the pieces up.

Caption: Stared down by civilians with no intentions of cleaning it. ‘If no one else is picking it up, why would I?’
Honorable Mention
A man is in the store looking at a shelf, and is curious about everything he is looking at. My photo relates to the theme investigation because the man in the photo is analyzing the shelf. He is curious about what is on the shelf.

After a long day of perusing the streets and looking for wall murals to pose in front of, my friends and I retire to the beach. My friend investigates the beach through her camera lens, taking pictures of the people lounging on the beach and of the vast expanse of sand. She seeks to capture only the best pictures, scanning the beach for the perfect shot.
Honorable Mention
She is shyly looking over her feather fan investigating me. I am also shyly investigating her and her culture. I took the photo because we are investigating each other and I loved the sparkle in her eyes showing her curiosity. I felt connected to her because of our shared shyness and interest in knowing more about each others worlds.
Honorable Mention
My image represents the night time roaming of a snail who is investigating my front yard. This photo was taken around midnight in my front yard after a really good rain, I actually got on the wet ground to take this image. I think this image represents my investigation of a subject that I have always been curious of. Whenever we have a good rain, which is not often, hundreds of snails appear out of the blue. I wanted to investigate this, I wanted to know where they are coming from and what they are doing when they come out?
Honorable Mention
I took this picture at my house when it was snowing. I was investigating the snow that was on the wood by the house. I also wanted to know how cold the snow was. I like looking at pictures and I like the snow.
Honorable Mention
Take a closer look at this photo. It may seem just like white random fluff in the blue background, but it is much more than that. This picture is a photo that I had taken in the air while on my flight to Asia. The clouds are very intricate, taking different shapes that can be depicted in different ways. Looking at it from far away, some people can investigate and say it is snow, but you must investigate it much closer to actually find something that had been embedded in the clouds. After I had taken the photo, I investigated and had found from what it looked like, two faces that were floating in the air. You should investigate the clouds, in the photo, and find the many mysteries that have been formed in the photo that was taken.
Honorable Mention
I was investigating nature and had been watching this eagle that hunts on the river. I see the same eagle every day and I thought it was amazing. I took this picture because I thought everyone would like to see it too.
Honorable Mention
This photo relates to the theme of "investigation" because when I took it, I didn't know I had caught the man in it in the photograph and I was simply just taking a photo of the train. I think this shows investigation because it shows a man's face in a crowd of people and shares the message that if you would only look around, there are so many stories people tell with their faces and you just need to observe and investigate to find them
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken in relation to the topic of the CaliforniaSteaming. My inspiration was the step investigators take in a crime scene when they use each piece of evidence where it as at the time of the scene. It sets the vibe of the dark feeling at the scene. This photo was taken outside of one of the buildings on our school campus.

I was home alone and I hadn’t written a song in a long time, so I thought it might be nice to. I write better when I’m happy and when no one else is around. I would write down music and test out chords, I was investigating what I could still do, and what notes would work together for this song. All the while, I was checking the clock because I wouldn’t want to be writing and singing when my family came home. This is because it would be impossible to continue with all the distractions and noise.

This photograph was taken in Castaic, California as a Space X rocket launched in the setting sun creating a shining, billowing streak that was widely seen throughout Southern California.
As a result of scientific investigations related to the current series of rocket launches, humans could be exploring Mars earlier than previously thought by aerospace engineers and scientists. Thanks to the ambitions of entrepreneurs like Elon Musk, the founder of Space X, rocket launches mark a new era of space exploration which is very exciting for students and teachers alike.
Due to innovations in rocket science engines, Space X and government space agencies have estimated humans will land on Mars in the late 2030's or even earlier.

Sometimes my mind wanders to science, and the many possibilities it holds. A scientific investigation can be revealing and enlightening. Science doesn’t have to be an advanced experiment. Science can be something as simple as making a connection between two things in life you didn’t think about before. I often find myself enthralled with science and the many wonders involved. I thought that this plasma globe which I’ve had since I was young is the perfect representation of science and imagination.

As I was hiking, I came across a cactus. I started to look at it and all its parts, and I realized it had smaller limbs coming out of it. I decided to take this picture because the camera caught detail that I couldn’t see with just my eye. This piece of the cactus was very small, and I could barely see the spines on it. Only after I took the picture did I notice how much detail and texture the cactus had. I feel that this photo best represents investigation because of the detail captured by the camera.

It was taken in the Bradbury Hotel. It relates to investigation because the slight blur of the puller and then the stairs going up to what, we don’t know. Something that could lead to whatever, but since this is a building with a lot of history it could’ve been used for who knows what. It was taken with an apple product that gave the picture the slight blur.

This picture was taken in my backyard when my family had our telescope out. My brother and I both enjoy space, and investigating all of the things beyond our planet. We often observe the moon or even clusters of stars during our investigations. By doing so, we deepen our knowledge and love for outer space.

For this assignment, I thought of using my dog, Stella, as the subject of this photo. Investigating through her eyes is pretty amazing. She investigates everyone and everything. She watches, listens and learns so intently and with so much purpose.  She is always waiting for me at the fence when I get home. She shows me by wagging her tail. She also tells me by jumping in the air that she missed me and is happy that I am home. She sees every movement I make and she is so ready to follow me wherever I go.

She loves me in many different ways. She is up and investigating every sound she hears because that is how she keeps me safe. Right now, while I type this she is investigating me; she is watching me while sitting right by my side so she doesn't miss anything. She has that cute little tilt to her head as if she is examining the situation very carefully. As I was clicking pictures of her at my house in my living room, she was so curious and became so interested in the camera because she didn't know what the camera was and why it was making so many noises.

She also creates investigative thinking within my own mind. She always makes me wonder if she sees me in monochrome or in color. Also, I wonder if she knows it's me every time she sees me or based on a certain smell? Have you ever wondered about any of these things too? Does this make you want to investigate more about your dog? Do they feel emotions, do they remember happy moments or exciting moments? Just thinking about this makes me want to investigate a little more about how dogs investigate life. I want to learn more about my dog Stella. I love her and I know she loves me. I can see it in the way she watches me with her beautiful eyes. The way she investigates life so whole-heartedly should be the way we as humans investigate others as well. I think we would be much more understanding and loving if we saw the world they way dogs do.

I was planning to get a close up photo of plants and flowers and animals. When i got close the tree in the field where I was hoping to get a good picture of my PE field, I noticed the sun glare that made the photo look nice so I focused more on the sun glare and was told it would look nice in black and white.

Eyes are the deepest story tellers of all. Nobody really knows what they tell but the person themselves. They show more emotion, not everyone can describe. When I took this photo, I was in my backyard with my older sister. It was early in the morning, but the sun was shining bright in her path. Recently, my family has been going through hard times. In my sister’s eyes, you may not have known how she was feeling or if she was hurt, if I had not told you what was going on. My photo relates to this year’s theme, " Investigation" because it means to find out or examine what is going on around you. When you look to my photo, you want to know how deep her eyes go and what story they may tell. Eyes are the deepest story tellers of all, but sometimes you just need to investigate a little deeper into them to figure out their story, and solve the mystery.

This photo was taken when I went to the library with my sister over Thanksgiving break. My sister wanted to take me to somewhere fun but somewhere I could also learn, so she took me to all the different parts of the library and gave me a scavenger hunt. She gave me her phone and let me take a picture of all the things on the list and all the places I investigated. I chose this picture because it was taken in my favorite place of the library, the Children's Garden. At the Children's Garden I had to find the Prism Tunnel and investigate how the rainbow was surrounding me. The way it works is that the sunlight and the mist play together and create a circle of rainbows I could play in. It was my favorite thing to play with at the Children's Garden because I love rainbows. I learned a lot while investigating the many parts of the library, I would love to go there again.

The difference between viewing the sunset over a cliff and watching the sunset fall in the ocean is that when it falls off of the cliff there's this feeling that we could look over the edge and see the sun happily taking a break from it's duties on our planet. But as it sets itself in the ocean, it seems as if some sea monster is trying to take it for it's own purposes: dragging it down, drowning out the life source so that we are vulnerable and easy to control. When the sun sets in the ocean, we can't just go look for it. In fact, we must start a never-ending investigation, one that is only driven by our hopes and prayers that our beloved planet will fight off the sea monster and come back to us...

I took this picture at the beach, where I often go to get away from the world and think. I was walking down the path, looking for a good place to take a nice shot of the sunset and passed by this tree, creating a perfect framing photo of the sun setting in the distance over the horizon. After taking this shot, I watched the sun, admiring it's beauty and was happy I was blessed with such a beautiful sight.

This photo was taken over Johnny Carson Park in Burbank California, it is an investigation photo showing a freeway, mountains and a sunset. With this photo I am investigating what is going on in the city.
Honorable Mention
To me, investigation means looking out into places that contrast greatly from your usual surroundings. In this picture there is a collection of skyscrapers and a mountain shown between an opening of plants and a wooden fence. The plants represent your usual surroundings which contrast greatly from the industrial architecture of the city beyond. This also signifies how investigation means searching beyond and making connections between different aspects of life. This is shown through the plants leading to the city and how two very conflicting facets of nature connect. The picture signifies a call to go beyond because in order to view the city you must take away the plants that cover the view and be open to new things. If you don’t peer through the plants you will not know what great things the world has to offer.
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken at my home right after my cat, Luna, had jumped on our dinner table to eat our food. I thought it relates to the theme of "investigation" because we had to check and see if she had actually eaten the food but because of her eyes, you could see that she had a suspicious look. We did find out that she did eat some of our food and we ended up investigating what it was.

When life kicks you in the behind, just get up and investigate where your happy place is. No matter where you are, it will get better. Trust me. I've been there. When you get knocked down you wanna give up instantly. The subject in this photo is how she has been trying to skateboard for months and fall after fall, she still has the strength to get back up; she knows the results will be great. Sometimes getting back up isn't easy and you think, is all the time and pain worth it? Well you will soon find out that it is all worth it.
Photography has always been an outlet for me to express myself. Even on the tough days, there was something good to hope for. Always.

This is a picture of a mini city made out of Legos. At first you might think it’s a picture of a real city. Things are not always what they appear to be. Sometimes you have to take a closer look and investigate to discover the facts and find out the truth.

When I was in New Mexico, my family and I went hiking at this national monument called Tent Rocks, I found a hill that was covered with trees. The rocks at the national monument are shaped like a tent, so I investigated on how to take my photo in a different way. The rest of the hike was so beautiful and interesting about how the rocks were formed. The photo relates to the contest theme "investigation" because it was interesting how the hill was slanted.

How Cold Is My Pool?
So far, this February has been mostly hot outside, but although the weather is hot, that doesn’t mean my pool is! Here I am dipping my toes into my pool. Should I go swimming, or should I not? Through my investigation, I discovered the water is very, very cold. This answers my question. I guess I shouldn’t go swimming in February!

This photo was taken on a trail behind my neighborhood. The last time I went hiking on this trail was around my birthday in April. I remember the area being covered in complete greenery, but now it’s pitch black after the October fires that consumed the hills. The model of my photo is a friend who lives down the street from me. I wanted to capture his reactions of the dark hills and show how it affected him since the fire was literally occurring in our backyards.
Honorable Mention
In this photo, I wanted to capture a silhouette of a person standing there and investigating the artwork on the wall. This person represents me, looking at, examining and investigating my own artwork. Art is something more than just a hobby to me, along with photography. These are my passions. And sometimes the best thing to do to help myself get through hard times is to express my ideas and visions through art and photography. Looking back at my old artwork and investigating those pieces helps me better myself in the field of art.

To the most trusted and loyal detective,
There is a thief out on the loose. They probably just made the biggest heist in history. They robbed the Charleston Mansion, the richest most famous family’s home. My purpose for selecting skulls as my subject was to link it to the theme of this competition. Usually, when skulls are being accounted for people think about harm, death, or crime. In this case, the skulls I have selected are colorful and have flowers. I did this purposely because in the Hispanic culture, these types of skulls are used to celebrate the day of the dead and to remember our loved ones. We all have come to lose someone at one point in our lives, unfortunately, but it is up to you to decide how we honor them.

I believe this photo fits with the "investigation" theme as you can perfectly tell a story with this picture. She is holding a camera and being captured, so it is as if she was trying to "investigate" you, yet she was caught. What's a better device to have with you in an investigation than a camera!? As we all know, the camera sees more than the eye!

In the city, there are more things than just people. Look up and down, look all around you. There are buildings with such great detail and such great height. There’s different weather every day. There’s always something new to see throughout the day in the city because there’s just so many thing to explore and investigate.

This is an eerie photo of a man underneath a lamppost on an empty street. I took this photo on the street outside of my house at night. I thought it was the perfect location since my street was kind of curved and there was just one eerie lamppost on the corner of the street. This photo connects to investigation in many ways. I tried to make it kind of creepy and mysterious so people can investigate the photo themselves. The man under the lamppost makes you kind of wonder who he is and why he is the only person on the street. I made the photo darker but I wanted some sort of light in it because it kind of reminds me of a flashlight used by investigators. I left some parts of the photo unseen because it left a mystery. I also wanted to focus on the parts you could see because the light illuminated a certain area just like how flashlights only see the places you point them at.I hope you guys enjoy my photo because I put hard work and effort into it. Thank you for your time in looking at my photo and reading what I have to say about it.

This is the story of investigation of ourselves. We are surrounded with relfections and contsantly ask ourselves who we are. We investigate our physical appearence as well as other aspects of ourselves daily for our entire lives. I was looking for places to shoot when I stopped at a washroom and saw Rose looking at herself in the mirror. Instantly I had this idea. This shows a young girl investigating who she is.

I went to a book shop. I turned around and found a little door. I asked what is this door for? The store owner said it is a gnome home. So I "investigated" what was behind this small wooden door. I slowly unlatched the door and looked inside. It looked like there was a party. There was a cake and some friends inside with a sign that said "look for love and you will find it." There were some flowers for a birthday gift. Did you know there's an estimated 25 million gnomes in yards across the country? So to my surprise I found several small doors around town where gnomes live.

Each year my family goes to San Luis Obispo during the summer in order to see more places and enjoy ourselves. Over the year, this area has become more tourist like, so there are a lot of photos and I decided to capture this photo of young kids checking out area and "investigating" the cave.
Honorable Mention
The photo was taken in San Francisco, under the Golden State Bridge. It was especially gloomy that day.
Investigation means the act of looking and finding something or someone. I just happened to be under
the bridge and was exploring around because it kinda looks like a hiking trail. I saw this shred and thought
it looked like those old sheds used as restrooms in the woods, like the movie Shrek. The possibility of going
into the shed for an exploration was kinda like an investigation. An invertigtaion to find the perfect photo.
Honorable Mention
Two friends walking, observing, and taking in the nature. The Hollywood sign hike is 2.9 miles long and they endured the hour and a half walk just to be in the shoes of a tourist. We’ve lived in California our entire lives and, yet, we’re still amazed by the beauty of nature. We investigated the life of a foreign tourist to see what it’s like in the eyes of another human.

This photograph displays the theme of investigation as my brother studies a leaf he found in our backyard. He studies this leaf with a magnifying glass to get a closer look at the veins and the composition. You can see the reflection of trees in the magnifying glass, but turned upside down. The reflection of the trees within the magnifying glass show my brother's discovery of not only this leaf, but of our world as well. This photograph overall represents my brother’s curiousness as he grows up, constantly discovering new things about the world around him.
Honorable Mention
My picture has to do with investigation because there is a person who crashed a car and is passed out with empty beer cans at his feet which implies that he was driving while intoxicated, and there is a police officer there investigating the scene.

Slam! The Investigator closed the wooden door,
With such a delight to be out of the cold, Rome night,
And only her flashlight to give her light.
Her skin crawled as she walked down the inky hall,
The paintings seem to move on the walls.
As she neared the end of the hallway she entered, she spotted a door the wood as black as the night,
She wished she were back in the daylight,
With her family, friends, and the feeling of being safe.
She wrapped her fingers around the doorknob,
Wishing she had a chance to choose a new job.
The door creaked open as she could feel her heart pounding through every inch of her body,
The wind of air the door had created caused her her jacket of her black outfit to sway behind her.
There, as if he had been waiting there for years, stood a tall, impatient man at least 6 feet tall,
This is exactly what he boss wanted her to do: find this man and make him fall.
After this mission, she can go home,
Back to the city of Rome.
But her future was slowly fading,
As the man slowly lifted a rifle,
And a click of the safe lock turning off, awakening it.
"Bye, bye, future," she thought.
Bang!

This photo was taken just as the sun was about to disappear. The photo is just like I took it-no changes

When I look at my photos. I see that I keep investigating darkness and light and the battle that continues. I think I'm not just looking to the sky but also looking at the world the same way. I also see how it all changes in a blink.

This photo was taken in my backyard around 7 am. I looked out the window and saw how the light was filtering through the trees and immediately started taking photos of the view. This photo symbolizes investigation because in taking this photo, I was investigating how the light filters through the trees. Additionally, through my camera, I am looking at something that maybe I could not see before, and seeing this through a new lens. I love taking photos because I can use my imagination when I am taking a photo, rather than just seeing it through my eyes. Additionally, I can capture the moment, and have something other than just a memory.

I think this picture of the lizard is good for the theme of Investigation. Investigation means researching something you do not know. I picked this picture because I do not know what the lizard is doing. I think the lizard is looking for something to eat. Maybe the lizard is looking for someone to be with or it was looking for a cool place to stay cool. That’s why I chose the lizard picture for investigation.

To investigate is to observe. You observe the texture, color shape, size and depth. My brother in this photo is investigating a painting that is hung up in my room to the right of him. The painting of a beach is one our grandmother bought at an art fair. The painting has so many parts to look at especially because of all of the colors, depth and perspective.

Mt. Shasta looms over the valley. I became very interested in the legend about there being a city with a technologically advanced society of human beings or even mythological creatures living inside the mountain. This picture inspired me to investigate the possibility of the legend having any truth to it.

This is a photo of a student climbing the fence where it is not permitted. It shows investigation because not only are we wondering and trying to investigate what the student is doing but the student is also investigating. Viewers of the photo might want to know what is going on, what the student is doing. The student is investigating what is on the other side of the fence, what mysteries lie on the other side.

This picture was taken of a sunset on a summer day. I took this picture because it really caught my eye because of the lighting and contrast with the clouds. This picture relates to the theme investigation because you are investigating something new. Think about it, every day you wake up knowing that there will be a sun. Through ups and downs everyday you know the day will start with a sunrise and end with a sunset. I would really like the judges to know I did put a lot of work in my picture and would be grateful if you were to consider me as a option for a winner. Thank you for looking and considering this picture thank you.

I took this photo while on an adventure in Death Valley. While camping, I started to really take in the sights, sounds, and smells all around me. As I was scanning my surrounding, I noticed a Volkswagen Type 2 Van gazing at me. The door was open, as if inviting me to gaze inside. I couldn’t see anything through the front window. As I crept closer and closer I investigated what was inside. Through the darkness I could see two eyes looking back at me. Apparently, my investigation led me to a living space being occupied by a man named Robert.

This photo was taken during a ride back to California, we were currently driving through Utah when this storm started to clear. How may this photo be related to "Investigation"? The fact is that almost all of our actions are some form of investigation. Investigation is to inquire into a specific item or event. The simple act of monitoring the condition of a wound or the freshness of groceries is an act of investigating. Any photograph starts with a form investigation. I simply was intrigued by this storm and the resulting image. An "investigation" into the meaning of an image could yield many different ideas of what the true meaning is. Someone may just see the clearing storm and beauty of the image, others may try to find a deeper meaning.

On the surface, the photo pictured does not seem to display investigation. It may picture awe, natural beauty, but it does not scream investigation. Just before this picture was taken I was on a road trip with my family and we were attempting to find this lake.We had much trouble finding it, but once we did we saw its amazing sense of peacefulness. I snapped this picture that showed the water was so smooth it could reflect the towering mountain above it almost perfectly. All in all, the photo might not show investigation on the surface, but the journey and context behind the photo definitely have heavy elements of investigation.

I was walking around with my grandpa who loves to take pictures and who taught me how to use a camera. He always likes to take pictures of different people, so when he saw a group of children playing around he started taking pictures of all of them from many different angles and still seemed unsatisfied with his pictures. He finally sat down and took one more picture which I photographed him taking, and after he took it he told me that he loved the picture that he had just taken. He told me that when taking a picture that it is important to investigate and find different angles and exposures to inorder to get the photo that you want.

I came downstairs and took notice of my mom who was sitting alone on the kitchen floor. She was attempting to fix a broken pipe under the sink. After watching her try to fix the problem, I felt a sense of admiration as I realized she is always doing hands-on jobs around the house. The tasks she takes on are typically thought to be jobs for men but my mom disregards the standards and redefines them. My photo best represents investigation as I investigated the role of women.

This Picture was taken on June 14 2017 in the archeological site of Monte Alban, one of the earliest cities of Mesoamerica situated in Oaxaca Mexico, The city was founded towards the end of the middle formative period at around 500 BC, and interacted with other Mesoamerican states such as Teotihuacan. To me this picture represents investigation because of the great efforts needed to dig out the city and cataloging and cleaning all the artifacts, buildings and bodies that were found on this site, also the fact that allows me to learn how people lived in the past, what they ate, how they cook, what they wear and how they die is the perfect
example of what investigation means. The name of the tribe that build this city was the Zapotec culture and for closed to a thousand years the city of Monte Alban was the center political and economic gathering for the Zapotec culture.

The Salton Sea in California has fascinated me for years because of its outward appearance of a wasted body of water. I’ve seen pictures and read about a time when the shores were bustling with people and the water filled with fishing boats, ski boats, and swimmers. I travel the north and south sides of the sea on my many trips to Glamis, constantly curious about what it might take to be a lively place again. I’ve stopped a few times on the north shore to further investigate the Salton Sea. The dead fish that still wash up on the shore have always led me to believe the Salton Sea is unhealthy and unsafe for anything living, and I’ve been further convinced by the foul smell that nothing thrives at the Salton Sea. On February 19, 2018, I decided to stop at the Visitor’s Center on the north shore to continue my investigation of this mysterious place. I was amazed to find people fishing on the shore. Seemed a guaranteed illness would follow eating fish from the Salton Sea. I was most interested in the beautiful birds populating the shore, bay, and sky. Despite the dead fish I was walking past on the shore, the birds appeared very much healthy. I stopped in the visitor’s center and learned how wrong I have been about the Salton Sea. Indeed, the Salton Sea needs attention to be preserved for wildlife and the enjoyment of future generations. The massive algae blooms from agricultural runoff and long, sunny days cause the sea to look green or brown. The plants bloom in abundance and die in abundance, which cause the oxygen levels to go way down and the fish to struggle for life. Sometimes, the fish die in great numbers; hence, the reason for dead fish on the shore. The decomposing matter and gases cause the smell. However, despite the problem, the Salton Sea has a diverse range of wildlife. There are at least 424 species of thriving birds. In addition to the birds, there are many thriving mammals, from bats to bobcats. Even the Tilapia, the only fish living in the sea, are plentiful and healthy. There is no evidence of the sea being polluted or having chemicals or sewage. I was wrong about the Salton Sea. My hope is that others will take interest in the Salton Sea and do the necessary investigation to find the solutions to keep the wildlife healthy and thriving for future generations to enjoy, perhaps even bring back the bustling human life to the water and shore.

While driving up the highway in late November my friends and I decided to stop at a turn out to observe the sunset. I wanted to investigate how the sun shrunk behind the large mountain range because that was the first time I saw a sunset while I was up the crest. I used the rule of thirds so the sun would be the focus of the photo.

Investigation can take place anywhere, even at the lunch patio at school (place where photo was taken), and Investigation can touch upon things as simple as a leaf. People investigate even the simplest things from the moment they are born, and this is a prominent part of human nature, as not many living things are able to process information gathered through investigation on a level as deep as us. Investigation is really a simple idea that people misunderstand, but people can learn to understand it through realizing that they investigate almost everything they see.

I was standing in front of my friends room and I noticed that she was in pain and that I wanted help. I know to help I would have to find out what was wrong first. As I watched from the distance, before consoling her, I had to think of ways to make her feel comfortable. I used my compassion to try an help her. By doing this I had to investigate my own capability to help her.

I took a short walk at night with my brother to look at the stars. My brother and I love to investigate the stars and identify the constellations. I wanted to spend some time with him before he left to a week long school field trip. In the middle of the walk, my brother was pointing at all of the stars that were beautiful to him and would love to see again the next night I walk with him. This represents investigation because my brother is spotting, naming, and wondering about all of the stars around him.

Did you know that about 2,160 children are abducted or go missing each day in the United States? And there is a 98 percent chance that those children come back, eventually, to their families. Out of all the children who are kidnapped, around 74 percent of those are females and 75 percent are murdered in the first three hours they are taken. In this picture, the scene is set at a store, it is clearly visible that a little boy is wandering away from his mother or guardian. The child is entranced by a bag of candy that a mysterious stranger is holding. The mother is clearly not paying attention to her son, which leads to this whole event taking place. Around 58 percent of the population are addicted to their phones. This fact is completely horrible because it can lead to kidnapping and other awful accidents.

Although looking like a colorful tree, the papers have much deeper meanings. They are wishes of well being and fortune; for either the writer, themselves or for others. This tree has meaning physically and spiritually.

Whenever there is an investigation, I take time to figure out what happened. But in the end the light comes out of the darkness. After all that digging you finally find the answer. The new iPhone update allows your phone to name some of your callers "scam likely", everyone always tells me not to answer. Why not?

The photo was taken by me taking a picture of my friend running down the field at or school. I then cropped the photo and added a black and white filter. The photograph relates to the theme investigation by this girl going unnoticed and when she is noticed no one knows who she is so they investigate all of her traits to figure out who the mystery girl is.
Honorable Mention
The photograph was taken from inside a school locker looking towards the locker door where the girl is looking in. One locker was picked out of a wall of lockers. The locker was just barely big enough for me to fit into it.
This picture relates to the theme of "Investigation" in the sense that the girl in the photograph is investigating what is within the locker. She is looking inside with a curious and intrigued expression. She is positioned in a way that shows that she is in the middle of opening the locker door. The darkness from within the locker contrasts with the bright outside. This is symbolic in the sense that sometimes in the unknown we uncover something we might not want to uncover. Her almost vague curious expression on her face shows that sometimes we don't understand the impact of what we have discovered. When investigations occur they find the truth no matter how hard it may be to bear.
I would like the judges to know that working with this theme has been very interesting and entertaining. Especially with me being inside of a locker, my friend, the girl in the photo, and I could not stop laughing at the position that I was in. The whole experience was extremely amusing.

The image relates to the theme through a caption which is "every building has a story, but not every story will be heard. It is up to us to listen."

One of the biggest mountains in Mexico, on the Bufa scattered on the beautiful green hills the city of Zacatecas is laid out. To see the wonderful sight, my grandpa walks toward the wall to get a great view of the city where he is proud to call his home. Growing up on the ranch, my grandpa never had much of the city insight however something really excited him to see this city part of Zacatecas. This photo represents investigation because I captured his perspective looking upon the city that he is proud to call his home.

Walking trough different places we often forget where we are or where we have been. This photo shows where many people have been but does not show what people have been thinking. People at that time might have been happy or sad, our thoughts are truly an investigation. This was taken on a gloomy day outside at my school. It was taken on the P.E. track made of gravel.

I was walking in on of the local gardens, taking photos of the flowers and scenery, when I came across a spider-web. I was instantly disgusted and grossed out. But then I started investigating the web and saw how intricate and detailed it was. I then saw how the sun captured it beautifully so I grabbed my camera and snapped a picture. I didn’t think anything of it until later when I started investigating my thoughts. Why did I freak out so much about the spider-web? Yeah maybe it’s not a flower or something people typically take photos of, but it is still amazing. I went back to my camera to actually look at my photo and noticed it was really pretty.

This photo was taken in Downtown, LA, when my class and I went on an LA walking tour to better understand the city we live in. This photo reminds me of LA because although it looks so simple and “perfect” there is so much more to it. The main focus is the sunlight hitting the flower, but without the green bush, the street, trees and cars it wouldn’t be as interesting to look at. A photo is more than just its parts, and same goes for a city. After walking around downtown with my classmates I realized that LA is more than just its movie stars, skyscrapers, palm trees, warm weather, and traffic. It's a place filled with culture, creativity, and diversity. Although I was not born in LA, I have lived here for as long as I can remember and I never really realized how special of a place it was until I really looked.

I went to the abandoned zoo for my friend’s birthday, and I decided to take some pictures of the facility where animals used to roam around in. This picture was taken a few seconds before my friend decided to shout at me to keep up with the group of other friends. I got scared and I tripped and fell down some stairs but not all the way down to the cage. Luckily, I didn’t have any injuries and my friend apologized. I had no idea who put those candles at the bottom of the stairs, which was really mysterious to me. My photograph relates to this year's contest theme because there's really detailed parts in this photograph, such as the graffiti, that tell stories within themselves. Turns out the site of the old zoo was built around 1912 and continued to be built on over the next few decades. But by the mid-1960's it was decided that another zoo was to be built. This facility was under a very poor condition where animals would die and it was thought that the Health Department was going to shut it down for good. There was a myth going around about this zoo that a horror movie was filmed here a long time ago about a dog who was bitten by Dracula himself to become a vampire dog and was eventually killed and buried in this zoo. But the dog would come back to life at night to haunt anyone who steps foot onto the ancient grounds. Some people have said that they could even hear the echoing of the dog barking which was really creepy to me.

The photo was taken at my school, home of many students that have to stay on campus after the average six hour work day. Despite being a relatively small school, the compact campus always has something going on within its borders . Students run around hurriedly across campus anxious to finish up crafting the latest project before the oncoming deadline. The majority of students chose my school over a traditional high school to figure out more about college life since the school is known for its rigorous group work and college preparation, however the majority of students still have many questions in regards to college. Inquiring of our futures can lead to a treacherous train of terrifying thoughts , but having the support network necessary allows us to ponder the possibilities. The photo ties in to the overall theme of investigation since all investigation is to me means to research a topic, and I felt that the most relevant topic glued to the mind of the average high school student is college. We ponder about college on a daily basis, and will continue to wonder until senior year when we're closest to experiencing a slice of the college life.

This photo was taken inside of our class's work room. I used a red spotlight, a black piece of cloth, a white wooden box, a red net, a plastic skull, and a tripod to hang the net with the skull in it. This photo is an idea of investigation. The skull is an expression of the hung for thought and the hunt of ideas. The entirety of the human is an investigation and the mind is what is searching,it is the investigator.

This is my 8 month old boxer, Delilah. Delilah likes to explore our property, our neighbor's yards, and the cat's food. On this particular day, Delilah had been roaming the yard, playing in the melting snow. She returned to where I was sitting on the porch, and plopped herself down next to me. As we sat there, I understood how she felt, soaking up the warm sun rays. I took one look at her, and laughed in the moment, as I captured this shot. The caption to this photo should be "The Leaf". I love this photo of Delilah because it is sincere how she loves to investigate the world; only through a dog's eyes.

I have lived in the city my entire life and I never noticed just how grand the architecture is. But with an assignment and a camera in my hands, I became more vigilant and truly, profoundly investigated my city.

I was at CALM when I took this image of one of their goats. To relate this image to the theme, investigation is a synonym to exploration, examination, and inquiry. Without eyes to see, investigation would be hardly possible. We use them to observe other objects or situations, known or unknown to us. Everyone does this differently however. We investigate and examine things differently, and if we were able to see through another's eyes, we would see what they see, examine what they examine. If only we could investigate through another's eyes...

My class took a field trip around the city, entering places such as the Grand Central Market, Japanese marketplace and more. We were to take photographs of art we might have overlooked if it be another day. The theme, Investigation. We rode the subway and had a great time. This poem goes with my art piece:

Through the Gateway
Into an urban jungle
Speeding trains and flashing lights
Countless days and countless nights

I really like this picture because it is very mysterious and it appears as if you are looking through the peephole and that is the first thing that you see. I thought that is was so beautiful that it would be cool if I could see it through my front door so I attatched both of the pictures together. It is almost like you are looking into another world through the peephole.

This photograph was taken in the tunnels below the Devil's Gate Dam in Pasadena, CA. While looking for a good background to shoot a Valentine's image, my model and I found the tunnel. We did several takes at the opening of the tunnel, but there was such color and texture at the end, we decided to investigate what was on the other side. When i captured this image, it reminded me of "Alice in Wonderland" and her curiosity as to what was on the other side. This is one of my favorite images and I'm super excited to enter it in this contest.

I was captivated by this young girl who was running around and investigating her surroundings. I love how the lamp posts look as if they are caving in on her. In my eyes, these lamp posts represent the immense world around her, filled with so much to explore. As I was observing, she reminded me a lot of myself when I was younger. I lived for the hours and hours of backyard exploration and adventure. With time, this curiosity slowly was repressed by the stresses that my schooling brought me. This girl's curiosity and audacious personality has inspired me to bring out that part of me again. The adventures we have as kids should never end.

There is a time in every child’s life where he or she seeks adulthood. During that time, the child will seem confused and distressed, lonely and depressed. They will try and try and try but never seem to fit. But there will come a time of exploring and finding their true self, only to realize they are sinking.

I took this picture outside my front door after school. I was looking to see how much it snowed, what the snow looked like, and how cold it was. I was so happy that it was finally snowing. My wish came true!

I came up with the idea for this photo when I was watching a crime television show. I thought about how case files related to investigation. Specifically how detectives use case files to investigate criminals. I decided to print out some papers with the same theme. I also brought my glasses to give the image an extra pop. Something interesting about this photo is that it was actually a test shot. I was testing this layout and once I downloaded the pictures I actually really liked it. I felt that the simple aspect of the picture and the black and white aspect made it look very clean and smooth.

"Touching from a distance, further every time." - Joy Division

Taken at my school, my subject yearns to escape his depressive state, but yet, the shadows over power him, restricting him. Because mental illness is frequently overlooked in high school students, my work represents a student's struggles in facing a mental illness. With my work, I hope to create an awareness of the struggles many students face.
My photo relates to the theme "Investigation" because my subject is searching for his raison d'être.

This picture was taken in a photography studio and it was taken because the first thing that comes to my mind when it comes to investigation, is fingerprints. They are one of the main elements that are used for DNA profiling and matching of physical data which will eventually provide valuable information for an investigation. They are mostly used in criminal investigations and they often provide crucial pieces of evidence that can link a suspect to a crime. Prints are typically collected from a crime scene by specialists trained in forensic science techniques to reveal or extract fingerprints from surfaces and objects using chemical or physical methods. The fingerprint images can then be photographed, marked up for distinguishing features by latent fingerprint examiners, and used to search an automated fingerprint identification system.

This picture was taken at my dad’s apple orchard. I chose this picture for the subject of investigation because it shows a unique kind of investigation, which takes the form of adventure and curiosity, rather than mystery and detective work (which is the more literal meaning). This image captures my cousin looking across the rows of trees as we rode on the back of a tractor, readying herself for a day of exploring and discovering a new world, different from her everyday urban life.

The photo was taken from the gate to enter a backyard. The flower represents a few things like a trail of blood which is portrayed by the red of the petals and the odd situation of the flower being at a place where it normally wouldn't be which left a strange trail which causes questions and the need to investigate.

The photo was taken outside in natural lighting with the camera facing the trunk of a Honda accord on January 18, 2018. This photo relates to this years theme of investigation because it triggers a person to ask questions that lead to further investigation. It was taken in hopes to stir up further questioning and create an emotional sympathy for the person whom is being kidnapped in the photo.

I touched the tree and wanted to know what was in the hole of the tree. I had some food in my hand as I put my hand in the hole. I felt the food falling from my hand so I pulled out my hand and a bunny followed. The bunny followed my hand and started eating the food out of my hand.

I never noticed there were flowers in the playground. Then, I went out and started my investigation. In a corner, almost hiding, I discovered the true beauty in this flower. It was there, it was always there. I only needed to observe. There it was, there it is, true beauty.

Did you know, there is a Castle in Pasadena - a Nationally Registered Historic Monument and Officially Designated Pasadena Treasure? I didn’t until a couple weeks ago. Every Saturday I walk the sidewalks of Old Town and photograph. This particular weekend I was walking by this big Victorian esk building confused what this place was. I peeked through the vines on the gate with my camera and found the wooden window ajar and vintage white curtains. The Castle Green is a hotel in Old Town, Pasadena. Castle Green has a unique exterior giving off a mystical facade. It is surrounded by a metal fence intervened by green leafy plants. This photograph pertains to the theme, “investigation”, by my curiosity in exploring this 1898 hotel I never knew was there. I have driven by the Castle so many times and never took a second look at it. This old hotel is so interesting having a piece of physical Californian history. Once opened Castle Green was the social center of Pasadena. The hotel hosted many tycoons and presidents.

This photo was taken at a park where I was invited to a party. My dad had his camera so I took it and started messing around. I was driving in the car with my family to our library, and saw an amazing sight in the sky that looked like a UFO! We pulled over to the side of the parking lot, and I hollered for my mom to hand me her phone, so I could take photos and video of this before I missed it. Watching the rocket high above us sure was an awesome sight to see.

It turned out that the amazing sight in the sky was space rocket that Elon Musk and his team from SpaceX sent in to space. SpaceX’s “Falcon 9”, the rocket is called, launched from Vandenburg Air Force Base here in California. I thought at first a UFO was trying to communicate with us! The trail it left was visible for quite a while. If I had to guess, maybe about 20-30 minutes. The rocket was carrying ten satellites into space.

This photo was taken in a studio at in the far back of the classroom with the lights off and a light protruding from the bottom up. When we eat fruit we simply peel the skin and eat it with no questions asked. However, the curiosity peaked when I had to know if there was anything in between the lines of the innards of fruit. As I continued to take shots of various fruits I still was not satisfied with seeing a vague transparency. I decided to get up close and personal with the fruit by exposing a clearer image with a magnifier. The image became clear as day when I found the intricate patterns our everyday fruits hold, it was truly fascinating.

When I took this photo, I was on the pier at the beach. I had just gone to the pier with my family for a day trip. We were just walking around and I had noticed that if you were to look down, you could see the ocean between the cracks of the boards. It was very nice to see that you could have the natural beauty of the ocean just underneath your feet. My photograph relates to the contest’s theme, “Investigation”, because, everyone tries to look for nature's beauty all the time, but you never realize that it could actually be underneath your feet. I like to always investigate the natural beauty in everything, this shows that if you look in the most random of places, you can always find beauty in everything. You never actually know what could be underneath your feet until you really look and investigate. I haven’t edited the photo with anything including software.

The person captured in a family friend named Fernando. He is captured invisoning the art, and the meaning behind a blank wall, a black paining. He says," it is like the mind, unknowing and unending".

The photo itself is unknowing. There is no true story behind it or with a caption of detail it requires investigation and an imagination, therefore making it a mystery with no words, or rhythm.

Twenty meters beneath the city of Paris lie the bones of six million skeletons. Six million people, each with his own untold story. When the bones were moved from the cemeteries into the catacombs, these people not only lost their identity but the details of the lives they had lived. Walking through the catacombs, I was in awe of the piles of bones lining each wall. These skulls in particular caught my attention. Who were they? How did they die? The leftmost skull is badly broken. Was it a fatal blow, or some unfortunate accident occurring years later by some clumsy Parisian. I can’t help but wonder: did they know each other when they were alive? Or have they been condemned to spend their final resting place next to a total stranger? Unfortunately, today’s technology is unable to answer these questions. Yet, I ask these questions hoping one day the mystery shrouding the bones can be lifted. As written on the entrance to the catacombs, “Arrète! C’Est ici l’empire de la mort” and if one is to enter the Empire of Death, she has to investigate.

I took this photo when I was on winter break in Lake Arrowhead. There are many interesting places to explore in the mountains and when you explore you investigate your surroundings. The fact that no one had walked on the fresh snow means that no one had gone to explore and investigate it yet.

This is a picture of an onion’s stem up close. I was in my dinning room, and the picture was taken on a poster board on the dinning table. Vidraru Dam was constructed by the Socialist Republic of Romania in 1966 to glorify the communist regime and its achievements. My mother was raised in this oppressive regime and was taught to dedicate herself to communism. Almost 30 years have passed since the Romanian people had revolted and adopted democracy and the country still bares deep scars from this oppression. This past summer, I visited my mother’s birthplace and explored my family's history. For the first time in my life, I could investigate my ancestry through photography. My photo depicts a monument that heralds a lost era which is still fresh in the minds of many Romanians.

I went camping in Los Osos with a group of friends. My buddy and I were walking along Pismo Beach. I noticed when he was walking, he was picking up smooth stones that were washed up on the coastline. This is a picture of a freshwater stream in Rhinebeck, New York, an upstate country area. This stream flows behind my house further down the hillside. The water that is flowing is naturally filtered and purified through the rocks. It is a main water source for the local deer, coyotes, foxes, rabbits, bears and many more animals. I had known the source was local, but I had not known exactly where. I remembered that in the summer I had come down to see this same stream. There was no water at the time and it was pretty dry. The day before this picture was taken, the snow had begun to finish completely melting. I have found that the water is runoff from the snow melt which is the main reason I can only see this stream in the winter. Some of the water is also flowing up from the underground. In this picture, the water flows through rocks and trap any debris such as leaves which will float. Most smaller rocks will sink to the bottom. When I tasted the water further down the stream, it tasted very cold and fresh. Similar to bottled water. My investigation concluded, where the source is and the natural filtering process, making it drinkable.

We’re all like flowers in a way,
We just have to find that special day
First a seed, all so small
It takes a little motivation to start it all
Trying to investigate who we are
Though it may leave a scar
Soon we’ll able be there, you see
We’ll all start blooming
We can all learn to grow in our own flower
Sometimes you just have to find that power
No matter how hard it takes
It’ll all be your own one day

The photo was taken in a cultural place of the city. I wonder what it would be like to soar above my city and see every wonder from above. I wonder what it would be like to be tiny and admire every crevice within architecture. I wonder what it would be like to search, explore, and investigate everything I can. I wonder what it would be like to accomplish my goals. Well I’ll find out tomorrow because everything I wanna do can happen with some work and that’s what it took to design and build the beautiful buildings in my picture.

The picture was taken nearby the entrance of the Bradbury Building. It appeared on a pole with an article written on it, and there was an image of a man who's face was physically scratched out. It makes me wonder if the man had done something wrong for his face to be removed. Maybe it was just a young teen who liked the feeling of rebellion. Perhaps we'll never get to know.

The importance of something may require a longer time of deliberation. This arrangement of staples and coins creates a message in Morse code, saying “DEREK WAS HERE”, relating to the idea of investigating deeper into something. This code is used to “investigate deeper” into the location of someone at a certain time, which could potentially be just the beginning of further discoveries. The thumbtack is unknown to the investigator, but in reality, it marks a real place—Tristan da Cunha. Both clues go hand-in-hand to connect the dots to a conclusion, as each gives more insight to the other.

Who am I? Every time I look in the mirror a different person looks back with new feelings and ideas. It takes bravery to look deep and investigate what I am seeing. It would be easy to ignore what I see and watch it fade back into my core. Then I decide what I am going to show the world and put my public face on.

The idea behind this photograph is the mystery that provokes investigation. One can just imagine coming home to this scene and immediately wanting to know “Who did this?”. The intense contrasting colors and shards of sharp, shattered glass become tools that add to the drama of the “crime scene”. In the end, visuals like these, are the ones that ultimately aid in the investigation and solving the mystery.

I took this photo in a small town called Bisbee Arizona. My friend and I had been cooped up in a hotel for the days leading up to this photo, so when we were told that we could go out we were ecstatic. The town is known for it's street art, so there was no bare wall in sight, it was absolutely beautiful. My friend and I were so amazed that it didn't occur to us that walking through alley ways was probably not a smart idea.

That day was an example of how we let our youthful curiosity bring us to investigate this small unique town, the day that we traveled and investigated through both rain and shine. The symbol of the security camera was all around once we started to look, as well as being a crucial part of the modern investigation.
