This year, I started my sophomore year, and I play for the school's varsity girls basketball team. Last year, I played for the JV girls basketball team as a freshman. I remember I was nervous because I was just a freshman and being around sophomores and juniors and seniors was really intimidating. I anticipated that they were going to hate me and see me as a really bad player. To my surprise, they were really nice and supportive. They welcomed me, and we had many team bonding experiences outside of basketball that brought us together. Now as a sophomore, I realized that the new freshmen joining the basketball team might feel the same way as I did last year. I gathered a few of my sophomore teammates and we took the freshmen to a football game in the fall. This was a great experience for all of us, and I really enjoyed stepping up and welcoming the new players to help them get more comfortable with us as teammates and friends.

This photo was taken on a weekend night at an arcade while hanging out with friends. Everybody was having fun, playing games, and having a chance to talk with each other and engage in conversation. Everybody was participating in one way or another whether it was with each other or in fun. Everyone had a chance to relax and have a fun night.

This photo was taken at school during a marching band practice. Contrary to common opinion, marching band is actually a very rigorous activity. Members must march in unison to a beat with heavy equipment, all while playing difficult rhythms and pieces. Marching band members stay late out at night, stay just as long or sometimes even longer than other conventional sports teams. Marching band members are passionate about their art, and practice constantly to make their performance as flawless as possible. Here, I tried to emphasize the amount of skill, strength, and precision marching band takes, by exaggerating movement through the use of blur, while still showing the neat lines they form during their practice.

This bird was dropped by a hawk accidentally as it was feeding up on top of a tree in my backyard. The bird was freshly killed when it escaped the grasp of the hawk. Later in the day, when I came back to my yard, the hawk had ripped opened the bird's cavity and fed off of it. The organs were gone and the neck was picked at. Even though the fate of this bird perhaps would be considered terrifying, in the end, it provided nourishment for a hawk which in turn made it possible for it to continue living.

In this image my goal was to capture an image that represented the participation theme through the action of community service. Community service is able to be showcased in numerous ways, however, I chose to use the action of picking up trash. In my mood board, I focused on the color scheme of greens and blues. In this image I was able to capture the sunset and its natural pink vibrance. I decided to surround my editing style around the color of the sunset. Therefore, I increased the exposure and saturation levels.

This photo was taken inside a church youth group during worship. The subject was standing towards the stage and raising his arms toward the worship leader that was singing. The person in this photo is participating in an environment that is unfamiliar, and therefore creating new opportunities for himself. The setting created a sense of hospitality, and participation immediately became simple. In my mind, participation is the key to unlocking new things and experiences such as that shown in this photo.

This photo was taken outside, right in front of my house. It was very cold yet my mom and grandmother were outside looking at the sky. They were looking around and just spending time together in each other's presence. I had gone outside to see what they were doing and I saw that they were holding hands. I had asked what they were doing and they responded with, “spending time together.” They were showing participation by taking part in spending time with each other. They might not have been doing much of anything, but they were happy to be able to spend time with each other. They were taking part in spending time in each other’s lives. My photo isn’t much of anything and it is very simplistic. Though it may not seem like much, this photograph is showing a daughter spending time with her mother.
