This photo was taken on Christmas at my aunt's house for a family get together. The picture relates to this theme because I like to take pictures for participation purposes.

This is a photo of city names on top of each other. The cities that are named in the picture are more than hundreds of miles away and all cities tie into each other and participate to make this photo come alive. I took this photo on the way to a convention back in July. The reason why I chose this photo for the photo contest is because I feel like this is one of the best pictures I have taken.

The photo came to me when I was in the gym and saw one of the girls that sat on the side pass a ball to one of the guys playing the game. I set this one up, so it looks like the guy and the girl are participating together. The photo could be a pass or handing the ball to one person or the other. The way I like to see it is the guy passing the ball to the girl since girls usually not the ones out playing the sport during PE.

A couple of months ago, my dad told me to go in the garage to get his tool box. While I was searching, I came across a small box that I'd never seen before. I took the time to carefully open it, and what I found was a small record player. Later, I discovered that it was my father's old record player when he was a child. The record that was still laying on it all these years was his favorite song as a kid, "The Little Drummer Boy". This song is what he brought to me as a child, a very enduring memory. I remember him always singing this song to me when I was growing up. This photo shows how my father and I engaged in a reminiscent time of both his and my childhood.

Mental illnesses are real. The reality of mental illness is that it can control one’s life. This type of illness changes perception, personality, mood, thinking, reasoning and behavior. Around 450 million people currently suffer from mental disorders, placing this illness amid the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide, and the truth is that one in four people will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives, according to the World Health Organization. It is complicated to understand mental illnesses for some people, and I don’t expect them to comprehend how mental illnesses affect people’s lives, but my goal is to make people realize that there is no reason to fear, reject, or avoid people they perceive as being “different” or “weird”.

Depression is a common mental illness in the United States. According to the World Health Organization, three-hundred million people around the world have depression. Untreated depression can lead to self-harm and increases the risks of suicide. The World Health Organisation estimates that each year approximately one million people die from suicide, which represents a global mortality rate of 16 people per 100,000 or one death every 40 seconds.

I decided to make depression my theme because I myself was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and Anxiety Disorder. Growing up I was constantly being bullied because I was “different”, and I hated myself, because, in my six-year-old mind I was convinced that I deserved all the insults and bruises. Nobody deserves to be treated less than anybody, especially if one can't control one’s thoughts and/or behavior. When I started therapy and was prescribed medication for my condition, I started to use my feelings to my benefit. My pictures contain real emotions and real-life issues. This photo was taken outside the apartment where I live. Sharing our experiences and celebrating our differences could ""transform"" perspectives, and make people realize that mental illness should not be a taboo subject. I’m not saying that the world can magically change overnight, but what I’m trying to say is that if we, as a society, get ""involved"", ""contribute"" to make this place more accepting and understanding for people with mental illnesses, and recognize the reality of it, future generations would not perceive depression, or any other illness, as “weird”.

I truly believe that it would be good for our community to try opening our minds and to comprehend what people with mental illnesses have to go through. Also, it would be beneficial to everybody because it would help create better friendships, and society would be more inclusive. Together we can participate to make a difference.

I shot this photo of my father and my sister doing batting practice on my driveway. They are preparing for the upcoming softball season. When I was her age, my dad would prepare me for the upcoming baseball season. This contest really motivated me in taking this type of picture because it would create a bond between my dad, sister and me. It tells us that if you practice you could be good at anything. What I have learned is that the only way to achieve the road to victory is by practicing.

I took this photo on a cold, rainy day after school. I stood tall on my tippy toes to achieve the angle and lighting desired. I believe this photo captures the theme "Participate" so well because there are many elements of participation needed when growing a plant. Once I really began to think of all the different elements, I couldn't believe it! The participation needed includes, to name a few, photosynthesis, soil, a person to plant it, and so much more. All of these things participate in the growth of the plant. However that is not all, how about the shade that the plant will provide to the many generations of people over its lifespan? How about the oxygen this plant provides to so many people and animals? What about plants that are edible? They are a source of nutrients! What about the fact that plants help clean water? Did you know that plants are used to make clothing? It's true, the materials are eco-friendly and less expensive. Plants also provide shelter and are an important source of furniture, too. Plants are also incredible sources of medicines and vitamins. Plants are also grown for the sake of bio-fuels. Plants participate in the contribution to our economy and economic growth. There are so many things made possible by the participation of plants in our lives. It's pretty amazing when you think about it!

In the tennis season, I enjoyed taking pictures of my teammates. It was taken as my friend was sweating and working hard to win her school match. My friend had the nerve to go out and play in tennis singles and participate in a high school sport to represent her school. Coming into the tennis season, my friend was playing singles and she was scared and thought she would not succeed as much as she did. As the season went on, the team began to work together and play like a team, cooperating with one another. My teammates ended up seeing our talent and the amazing qualities in one another. My team worked together and we thought we either win as a team or lose as a team, but either way, we had each other's backs.

My mother is playful and participates in everything no matter where we are or what we are doing. She makes life fun by participating in it! She reminds me to get out there and have fun and participate in life and not sit back and let it go by me.
