When I read the contest theme, I immediately thought of the natural phenomenon of figures being contrasted with the sky due to the rising sun. Every day when I wake up to go to school, the sun is rising on the horizon and every shape in my backyard is silhouetted. As I get ready, the sun rises higher and the shapes become more clear and colorful. I was interested in the shape of the trees and mountains in my backyard when it is impossible to see their colors because it is hard to tell what is what. However, the very distinctive shape of palm trees clearly distinguish them from the rest of the black shapes, which I found very interesting and worthy of capturing because they represent Los Angeles to most of the world.

This photo was taken in a public park around sun down. The park was filled with trees and color from the sun which made a good setting for this photograph. This photo of my friend connects to the Phenomena theme because it was a photo that I took on my friends camera. Im not used to shooting digital photos and she allowed me to use her camera to shoot this photo of my friend. Because of the fact that I wasn't prepared and didn't know how this photo was going to turn out, it is phenomenal to me.

This photo was taken at Disneyland at the Ferris Wheel. I believe this photo is a phenomena because I found the bright colors harmonizing with the contrast of the night sky was very beautiful and a sight worth capturing. I also believe so because it’s not everyday you have the opportunity to witness a sight so youthful and jaw dropping.

During photography, we had a shutter speed unit and we were taking pictures of cars at different shutter speeds. I always thought it was cool to include a photographer in the picture. So in this photo, I decided to take a photo with slow shutter speed, while the other person was using a faster shutter speed. I thought it was a cool phenomenon that I was able to capture two different perspectives, as I got a photo of the car being blurry, while his photo of the car was not.

Sodium Silicate is the scientific word for liquid glass. CD's are somewhat of a phenomena in composition and how they reflect light. I am a small person and enjoy focusing my camera on the small phenomena of the world. I like how light reflects and faces through the ice and CD to create an interesting composition.
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken in Eagle Rock, California. It relates to this year's contest theme, "Phenomena", because I was looking to take photos in the style of William Eggleston for a project, and this car showed up out of nowhere. It was the perfect shot - the vibrancy of the red car, the vintage looks of the shops in front, and the hazy mountains in the background all interplayed well together and looked like a piece of Eggleston's work.
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken on the top of a parking lot structure after it had rained. My friend and I noticed how pretty the puddles looked with the clouds and sun, and wanted to take photos of our reflection. Then we decided it would be fun to make it look like she was holding the sun.

This photo relates to this year's contest theme, as it is rare or practically a phenomena when it rains in California, and my friends and I get the chance to take amazing reflection photos. This photo also represents the theme phenomena as reflection photos such as these always make the world look like a mystical place, and it's a phenomena when one gets to look in these puddles at the right angle to see this strange effect.

Lastly, another reason this photo connects to the theme phenomena is because the photo resembles a total eclipse, which only reoccurs in same place on average once every 300 years!
Honorable Mention
The Greek word for Tension is "Stasi" and the phenomena of how surface tension works with oil and vinegar give a beautiful effect.

I took this photo during a vehicle fire on the side of Interstate 5. The whole thing was somewhat surreal, and I was given the task of taking pictures of the incident. This photo captures the subject of "phenomena" in several ways. Firstly, it highlights the natural- and unfortunately common- spectacle of fire and its dangerous yet beautiful qualities. I also believe the teamwork of firefighters is an incredible phenomenon in itself, and their selflessness is something that can not be easily overlooked.
Honorable Mention
I worked at a summer camp for kids. This is a photograph of a mother holding her son's hands for reassurance. It was wonderful to see the family connections. I think family bonds are a phenomena that holds our world together.
Honorable Mention
I really liked the idea of combining the two things that should never go together but work so well. This photo was a collective effort I had my mom holding the ice and my little bother keeping the fire going while I took the photo. I wanted to capture the chemical phenomenon of fire tied in with the physical phenomenon of the ice.
Honorable Mention
This photograph represents the phenomenon of time. Time cannot be avoided. Whenever we are enjoying something, it always comes to an end and we wish we could stop time. The ice represents this feeling of wanting to stop in the moment and enjoy the activity we are doing before it is over. The fire creeps by, melting the ice, resulting in a new day leaving us unsatisfied and wanting to go back. I put the clock in a box of water and froze it in the water over night. I waited for half of a side to melt and filled the side with paper towel and lit it on fire. It is cool to see the final product of a project I did in my backyard.
Honorable Mention
This photo is of a dancer performing the jump called a Fire-bird. It was taken at Natural Bridges Beach in Santa Cruz California as a silhouette photo and edited to enhance the natural rays of light. This photo represents "phenomena" because this jump is very difficult to perform let alone photograph at its peak. The composition of the photo also allows you to see the breathtaking scenery of the beach clearly within the background.
Honorable Mention
This specific flower caught my attention because of how it was composed. It's so unique, special and so natural. Those textures are so impressive and those lines are so expressive. The "Flower in The Dark" relates to the theme" Phenomena " because this flower is rare, impressive, natural and something that you don't see in other flowers. Also one technique that I used to catch the viewer's attention was the rule of the thirds.
Honorable Mention
I feel like the footsteps represent that it's a long road to go from life. This is also my first photo contest so I'm kind of nervous.
Honorable Mention
The picture was taken at my school to try and replicate the style of a photographer, Francois Dourlen. This relates to the theme of phenomena because a phenomena is something that only occurs once in a long time and this type of picture could be considered a human-created phenomena.
Honorable Mention
Mushrooms are associated with the trees and forest and are considered a good luck charm. They come in all different shapes and sizes and can be healthy or dangerous. Mushrooms are a phenomena because they are truly, a remarkable thing of nature. I took this photo after noticing how many mushrooms have grown due to the rainfall. Taking this photo made me realize how we ignore the little things in life around us. Photography is a big passion of mine, it has been since I was little. Getting my first camera after years of wanting one has made my passion even bigger.
Honorable Mention
This photo reminded me of a phenomena because the colors and arrangement of the sunset along with the moon in the background looks like an image from outer space, or a photo taken from the surface of another planet.
Honorable Mention
I see living things, no matter how small, as single and individual phenomena with overseen details that are taken for granted. The shimmer of the cat's eyes are the brightest feature of the subject in the photo and are drawn into focus on top of stairs that are each about the same size as the cat itself. The photo was taken from the basement looking up at the white cat that rarely stays still and or indoors, and catches the cats attention with a flash. The rarity of a simple event made me feel uneasy with uncertainty as to if it was an omen for something good or bad to come.
Honorable Mention
The wondrous beauty of the small intricacies produced from nature are the ultimate phenomena.
