My family and I went on a vacation to Maui. It was mid-July and the waves were huge. Usually I just like to body surf, but the waves made it impossible. A ton of surfers went over to the area in front of our condo. I decided to go up to my room to get my camera since I don't know how to surf. I then went back down to the beach and took some great shots of the surfers.

I think this photo fits the theme phenomena because this caterpillar will go through a process called metamorphosis which is fascinating. It is fascinating because its body will form into a chrysalis and eventually emerge as a big and beautiful monarch butterfly.
Honorable Mention
This photo was phenomenal to me because the squirrel I took a picture of came down the tree to interact with me and the people I was with. I took the photo when it was looking directly at me, and in that moment it felt like I was connected to nature and its animals.
Honorable Mention
My picture represents this year’s theme of phenomena because when I was in the school garden, I looked around at all the dead plants. But on the dead cornstalk, I spotted a live bug. That caught my attention! There was life in the garden!
Honorable Mention
This photo shows phenomenon because of the reflection on the camera lens. Reflection is a natural phenomenon as well as a beauty and when you put it in a picture, it turns out a pretty good picture.
Honorable Mention
I choose this image because from my point of you I rarely see any beautiful sunsets, and when I saw the sunset really admired how it looks so I had to take a picture. If you ever do see sunsets in Los Angeles, it’s usually in the summer and this was in winter so I was really surprised, another reason why I would consider this phenomenon. I would like the judges to know that I am a first timer and I am not a professional photography.
Honorable Mention
In this photo, I was heading over the freeway to the metro station in which I saw a man, all alone, walking his bike to the metro also. The time this photo was taken was at 7 am in the morning. This shows the poverty amongst Los Angeles. The fact that people can't afford cars, or have to get up on Sunday at 7 am to go and take the metro to work. It's hard for many people, and the gap between the rich and the poor is only increasing. I talked to the guy after in which he said he works in a small office in Downtown LA. Though before we talked, I took the photo to capture the real life scenario of an everyday working man.
Honorable Mention
I think that this picture is definitely a phenomenon. Because of climate change and deforestation, animals, bugs, and plants are losing their homes and trying to find new homes in other places. In this picture, a beetle is trying to burrow into my mom’s hair. This shows the phenomenon of nature before things like climate change takes over nature.
Honorable Mention
The subject of my photo is a city skyline with clouds over it. It is phenomenal because the lighting gives it an orange haze, and bright yellow clouds are shining through the grey ones.

In this photo, I used the rule of thirds, simplicity, and contrast. The bright colors at the top direct the eye to the city and clouds near the top. The bright golden clouds and orange skyline contrast the dark greys and blacks, making them pop.
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken in Monistrol de Montserrat, Spain. This picture represents a phenomena because clouds are covering the majority of the landscape which allows the viewer to interpret what is behind the clouds

Honorable Mention
This is a photo of Skittles that I arranged underneath a piece of glass. The piece of glass was a foot above the Skittles. I put water droplets on the glass. I took an out of focus photo of the water droplets.

This photo shows the phenomena of a convex lens because the water droplets acted like a lens and focused the light reflecting off the colorful bullseye made out of Skittles so that the Skittles would be in focus through the lens created by the droplets.
Honorable Mention
This photo tells a lot - texture and color. This photo was taken at a garden store. It relates to the theme because it contains a lot of color.
Honorable Mention
I took this picture because to me it shows phenomena. It looks impressive because I can use one of my senses to observe the color expanding in the water. Also, I was able to include my favorite color green. As it spreads through the water, it makes cool new patterns. I chose the top view because it shows a view from someone that is tall. To me, this shows phenomena.
Honorable Mention
I believe that the photo relates to the theme of a phenomenon because it shows how sunlight helps people see the world in many colorful ways. Yes, it has rainbows which are not rare however it shows the scientific process in which sunlight and a crystal or white light contribute to the making of the color spectrum, and how we are able to see these colors.
Honorable Mention
At his concert, I was in the front row. He was having fun, singing so great. He is an idol to me, or phenomenal. A phenomenal artist and person. In this photo he looks magical standing above me, a phenomenal figure. This photo was taken at Conan's concert this past December, I was there with my best friend. This photo relates to this year's theme because he is phenomenal in what he does, and this photo captures the powerful feeling. When taking this picture I had the same thoughts I am writing in my head as I do now. It was a great moment.

The concept of phenomena extends to the homeless in America, and the uniqueness of each homeless person in itself is an influence in the way people approach life. Whether it was caused by poverty, mental illness or even unluckiness, the means to which people get on the street are everchanging stories that are constantly overlooked on a daily basis. These people are living the lives that we tell stories about, and they are observed and ignored when they come into contact with other levels of society.

I want the contest judges to know that the value of each person is instantly undermined by first impressions of the homeless, but my work displays powerful messages that should make the judges consider what exists beyond our daily lives.

Butterflies symbolize the phenomenon of life itself, delicate and pretty, yet fragile and easily broken. They are often used to symbolize change, but In my photo, they appear uniform and lined up on a dark, fenced, highway. The only vibrant, lively color is the butterflies themselves. Although they are conforming now, butterflies can’t be caged by a fence.
Honorable Mention
My photo is a picture of Crater Lake in Klamath country, Oregon. It is natural phenomenon because it was formed by a volcano called Mount Mazama about 7,700 years ago. After the volcano erupted, it left a massive crater in its wake. For the next 200 years, rain and snow filled the crater with water and turned it into its current form.
Honorable Mention
This picture represents PHENOMENA, a Community is coming together to celebrate a wonderful game. There's a different diversity and Culture of people from all around the world to watch the competition. Also representing the LGBTQ community with the flags while the sun is setting. You can see people cheering and waiting with anticipation for the game to start. As you can see there is a WE WILL ROCK sign that shows everyone in the stadium pumped up, and as much work as the players are doing competing with the other team the people cheering them on are also a big part that motivates not just the players but everyone present at the time.

Honorable Mention
This photo was taken at a local beach during a fairly foggy day. I was looking for certain objects to photograph, like shells or clouds. Later on, I spotted a group of five or so birds that had gathered on the shore. The simplicity and the composition of the shot seemed perfect to me, so I took my opportunity. I had to act fast because quickly after I took the picture, the birds scattered about the shore.

I thought that this photo represents the theme of phenomenon because of its unusual composition. I personally have never seen these types of birds on this beach, so I can assume that they are not native to this beach and could be migrating. This contributes to the theme well. I also believe that the reflections cast on the wet shore are strange but also catch the viewer’s eye. The repetition of the birds’ markings can use the principle of pattern in photography and art. Overall, I feel that this photo is a rare sight and can definitely be considered phenomenal.
