This picture was taken in my dance studio, of one of the sisters/dance teachers. This dance studio is owned by four amazing sisters. They teach and manage the entire studio. This photo represents my passion for art and dance. I like how both of those things let me express myself, and there are no rules or limits to what you can do with both of these things. They let me feel like me, and let me forget about my worries.

My favorite photographs are ones that are not so easy to understand. Something is going on but everyone might think it's something different.

The original photo of the hole and light pouring through it was taken in a dark roof-covered bridge. It was along the wall of the bridge. The image of the girl was taken in a classroom with a green screen. The photograph intends to embody the phenomena that is the relationship between light and dark. The photographer hoped to show that even when it seems that darkness will consume, light is always ready to stream through. Even if it seems that your mind and body are drenched by darkness- as seen with the girl's image being manipulated to become a silhouette- light will always come and shower you.

Light and Dark will always be related as they are opposites. The two will always be tethered together, and while most people depict the dark as bad, it is important to accept and admire that the two coincide with each other. One cannot exist without the other, and there is something beautiful and phenomenal about that.

When I read the contest theme, I immediately thought of the natural phenomenon of figures being contrasted with the sky due to the rising sun. Every day when I wake up to go to school, the sun is rising on the horizon and every shape in my backyard is silhouetted. As I get ready, the sun rises higher and the shapes become more clear and colorful. I was interested in the shape of the trees and mountains in my backyard when it is impossible to see their colors because it is hard to tell what is what. However, the very distinctive shape of palm trees clearly distinguish them from the rest of the black shapes, which I found very interesting and worthy of capturing because they represent Los Angeles to most of the world.

This photo was taken in a public park around sun down. The park was filled with trees and color from the sun which made a good setting for this photograph. This photo of my friend connects to the Phenomena theme because it was a photo that I took on my friends camera. Im not used to shooting digital photos and she allowed me to use her camera to shoot this photo of my friend. Because of the fact that I wasn't prepared and didn't know how this photo was going to turn out, it is phenomenal to me.

One night, I was walking across an overpass with my dad. I had taken my camera and a tripod hoping to capture the rush of cars driving beneath us. Yet what caught my eye was my father, pacing back and forth trying to stay warm. It is a moment all too uncommon where one is allowed to be in thought and reflect as our fast-paced world buzzes around us.

This is my friend on the silks, defying gravity on almost lighter than air fabric. I turned the picture upside down for humor and to future further draw attention to her suspended in air defying gravity.

My photograph depicts the "Lonely Cypress' at the 17 Mile Drive, located at Pebble Beach, a wonderful site filled with 17 full miles of beauty and nature. To define nature, it is the phenomenon of the physical world collectively, discussing plants, animals, oceans, and all inherent qualities that are on our Earth. In the picture on the right, it depicts a lonely tree standing at the top of a high cliff overlooking the ocean water during one of the most beautiful of the world’s endless phenomenon, a sunset. The unity with all the nature aspects is truly beautiful and isn’t something that all see everyday and the way the sun beams off the rocks and leaves is riveting. Being a phenomenon, nature is one of the most beautiful aspects of life and often the one taken most for granted, which is what I believe made this image a unique and remarkable phenomenon.

My photo was taken in Brooklyn, New York during winter. This photo shows the Manhatten Bridge fully immersed in darkness with the gleaming lights of the city around. The photo shows two people admiring the bridge with subtle movement. This depicts phenomena because of the contrast of colors matching perfectly to signify a wonderous astonishment and a pleasing look to the eye. This image shows how incredible and surprisingly peaceful New York can be at night and the beauty its architecture is.
Honorable Mention
This photo was taken at Disneyland at the Ferris Wheel. I believe this photo is a phenomena because I found the bright colors harmonizing with the contrast of the night sky was very beautiful and a sight worth capturing. I also believe so because it’s not everyday you have the opportunity to witness a sight so youthful and jaw dropping.

During photography, we had a shutter speed unit and we were taking pictures of cars at different shutter speeds. I always thought it was cool to include a photographer in the picture. So in this photo, I decided to take a photo with slow shutter speed, while the other person was using a faster shutter speed. I thought it was a cool phenomenon that I was able to capture two different perspectives, as I got a photo of the car being blurry, while his photo of the car was not.

I always wonder if the ocean has a true color. Sometimes I see it green, sometimes I see it is blue. Today, it seems black! Is it the phenomenon of light that tricks me?

Sodium Silicate is the scientific word for liquid glass. CD's are somewhat of a phenomena in composition and how they reflect light. I am a small person and enjoy focusing my camera on the small phenomena of the world. I like how light reflects and faces through the ice and CD to create an interesting composition.

This photo was taken in Eagle Rock, California. It relates to this year's contest theme, "Phenomena", because I was looking to take photos in the style of William Eggleston for a project, and this car showed up out of nowhere. It was the perfect shot - the vibrancy of the red car, the vintage looks of the shops in front, and the hazy mountains in the background all interplayed well together and looked like a piece of Eggleston's work.

This photo was taken on the top of a parking lot structure after it had rained. My friend and I noticed how pretty the puddles looked with the clouds and sun, and wanted to take photos of our reflection. Then we decided it would be fun to make it look like she was holding the sun.

This photo relates to this year's contest theme, as it is rare or practically a phenomena when it rains in California, and my friends and I get the chance to take amazing reflection photos. This photo also represents the theme phenomena as reflection photos such as these always make the world look like a mystical place, and it's a phenomena when one gets to look in these puddles at the right angle to see this strange effect.

Lastly, another reason this photo connects to the theme phenomena is because the photo resembles a total eclipse, which only reoccurs in same place on average once every 300 years!
Honorable Mention
The Greek word for Tension is "Stasi" and the phenomena of how surface tension works with oil and vinegar give a beautiful effect.

This photo was taken over Thanksgiving break near Prescott, Arizona. I believe it relates to the theme of "Phenomena" because snow days can be expected in certain places in one season every year, but it is impossible to predict the exact day and time and sometimes- like in this photo- it occurs not even in the expected season. This snowfall also has the ability to transform what is normally a barren and dry land into a beautiful snowscape. That is why it is a phenomena. This small glimpse of God's creation helps you appreciate the simple joys of life and be thankful- fitting because of when the photo was taken. Sometimes, the simplest things can be beautiful.

The reflection and light passing through the water drop make it really stand out. I wondered if this could remind people about the 'last drop of water'.

My photo is a picture of my turtle, who sadly passed away in October. His name was Chivo and I occasionally took pictures of him. This photo was taken on the grass in my backyard. The theme phenomena relates to my picture because he was a special part of my life but I won’t ever see him again. All I have left of him are these photos which make them ten times more rare and special. One thing about this photo I really admire is Chivos's eyes and the patterns on his shell that make him unique in his own way. He was really photogenic, and he loved to be photographed.

This photo was taken in Rufigio Lagazuoi in Italy, after a day of backpacking in the Italian Dolomites. When I think of phenomena, I think of something unique. For me, this was a unique moment because it was not only a pretty rainbow and a magnificent background, but I felt like it was a representation of the bonds all the backpackers had made throughout the trek. During the duration of the trek, we go hut to hut, with the same 15 people. And for all of us this was the clear, unique moment and for me, a moment of temperance of all the people we met and hiked with.
