Oh Skateboarding
How hard can you be
One and a half turns
Just a jump and up
Why are you so hard on me
You give me ice burn
And a leg bump
So difficult I see I guess I have to learn
How to defeat the jump
With a stronger me
I can achieve
But it may take an eternity

I thought this photo could be classified as a "phenomena" because the rocks are perfectly linear and symmetrical to each other. There are hundreds of layers going horizontally which is something you don't expect to see in the natural world.

I took this while going to a garden with my class. I feel like it ties to this year's theme because this plant is phenomena in general. When it first starts growing it looks like a ball of fur, but once it opens it looks amazing. The whole process looks spectacular. In my picture, it was almost done blooming but you can still can see the fur like in the middle.

This is a picture of my friend Ellie. She was having her laughing moments, but right when I was about to take the picture of her, her expression completely changed. She became so serious with her stoic look and piercing eyes. You can't tell if she's mad, daydreaming, or just has no expression at all.

This photo was taken in Anchorage, Alaska. It relates to the theme "Phenomena" by showing the rainbow effect seen in the nighttime sky. I extended time exposure to capture foreground details along with the starry sky.

I took this photo at the top of Mt.Wilson when I went to go to a star gazing night at Mt. Wilson Observatory. I think this photo relates to the theme of "Phenomena" because to me, stars are such a fascinating thing. Like for example, the stars that I photographed that day could have been dead so long ago. But the light still remains and we can still see it. When you look up into the sky, you are basically looking into the past. To me thats just crazy and it raises one of those questions in my head that I can't stop thinking about. Its just crazy how the universe works.

When I took this photo I wanted it to show that although the future is unknown and only one can assume what's to come, there can be multiple outcomes. Like the plant in this photo - it branches out in multiple ways. Some lead one way and the others the opposite way; just how our choices in life will lead us to multiple things.

I took this photo in the streets of Cusco, Peru during an art parade. These girls pose with their baby llama and ask for pocket change almost everyday to earn money for their family. However, I was able to take this candid shot of them walking casually around people in Peru. It's not everyday that I get to immerse myself in the beautiful culture of Peru like this.

My photo was taken in New York City. I believe that it relates to this year's contest theme of phenomena because the definition of phenomena is an observable event or fact. Seeing the people of New York City rush to the train and the different types of people from different backgrounds, cultures and parts of New York City all congregate in one place shows the coming together of cultures and the conversations and friendships that can be made through the sharing of one commonality: the subway. The subway which is an observable event as it moves back and forth and transports thousands of people a day allows the world to stop and look around at those who live in the same city you do.

This photo was taken when I was 10,000 feet up to see the sunset in Maui. I enjoy watching sunsets because I see it as the most frequently occurring phenomena that allows you to see warm and cool colors in nature.
Honorable Mention
This photo represents two different types of phenomena: natural and man-made. The crane is representative of the man-made phenomena. The capability of humankind to create, destroy, and edit what exists is a phenomenal feat. Humankind has been successful in creating mental images and emulating it in real life. This image portrays the forever ongoing process of that. The backdrop of the image features a beautiful purple sunset. This natural phenomena is what has intrigued humans for thousands of years. Much of human creativity is inspired by the natural world and phenomena such as the sky. Without all these natural occurrences, human creativity and phenomena would not exist.

The photo was taken in my bedroom as my cat and I sat on my bed, with me looking out the window as the sun was setting. My cat and I tend to sit and stare out the window together all the time, and it's something I look forward to. For my cat, the house traps her from experiencing the outside; and for me it tends to feel the same. Even though all we do is stare outside and watch the birds, it is still an event in my life that I enjoy and pay attention to.

My “Surf's Up” photo relates to the theme "phenomena" because one of the senses that can be observed is color. As I was walking to the park, I noticed the vibrancy of the color in the surfboard and how it contrasted with the sky. This painted a picture in my mind of how I wanted to shoot the surfboard in a creative way. I took the picture at an angle where the camera was looking up at the surfboard and where you could clearly see the sky. I really enjoyed editing this picture and the final result is how I wanted it to look.

"Smile~" Whenever we take a picture of another person, there is often an urge to call for a smile. This habit made me struggle to capture a believable expression of joy from my subject. After cracking a joke, however, I was able to find this moment. During everyday life, we don masks of what we believe others want to see from us; where we feel a pressure to maintain pseudo expressions that miss the truth of the soul. How much of our spirit is comforted by synthetic exhibitions of bliss? Contemporary society hasn't ever been more connected, but it's the person, the individual, who feels the most lonely. We mustn't forget the vitality of emotional honesty.

The tree was just starting to bloom small pink flowers, and there were a lot of bees buzzing around and landing on the pretty flowers. I tried to take a picture of the bee landing on the flower, but it wasn't easy. So I considered it a Phenomenon because no matter how quiet I moved and how still I was, I wasn't able to get a picture of a bee in focus. Once I was able to get a picture that was in focus, it came out beautiful. I personally thought it was an interesting picture.

The photo was taken on an airplane. This is a phenomena image because you never get to take a picture of a very blue sky with white clouds. The image was never edited and was taken when I was living in the moment. I would like the contest judges to know that this is an important contest for me because my teacher is pretty nice and I believe she deserves a GoPro as a gift coming from myself.

I enjoy hiking in the morning to see the sunrise. After the countless hikes up this trail, I had been blessed one morning to have hiked at the perfect instance in which the sun had shown something I have never seen before. I saw the sun as if it was a brush fire, burning its colors into the blue sky. Thus, with this unique scene of the burning star, capturing the meaning of what a phenomena truly is.

The photo was taken at Zion National Park, Utah. It was taken after nearly a 3 hour climb to the summit of Angels Landing. Once at the top, you are standing at 5790 ft of elevation, and you are able to a see a 360 degree view of the rest of Zion Canyon. The photo relates to this year's theme, phenomena, because it's quite amazing how these things just form out of the ordinary. Not only can you see the canyon, you have the ability to climb the mountain that is very phenomenal.

What does the picture I took mean to me. It means a lot to me because the image I captured looks very intense and different because it doesn't look like your traditional wave. It took very good timing to take this photo mid-crash. I have shown people this picture and everyone has said they have never seen a wave like it before.

During summer vacation, my family and I went to Green Island which is just about 130 kilometers away from Taiwan. It turned out to be very hot there despite being surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, hence its nickname "Fire Island". The island wasn't very large as it was originally a place for prisoners, and only had a road that circled around it. As our tour guide drove us along the winding path, he explained that water activities are usually on the west side of the island because the ocean floor has a gradual slope upwards to the shore on the west unlike the steep slope on the other side of the island, thus the ocean waves are calmer on the west than east. Indeed, when our tour guide drove further towards the east side of the island, the light-colored, gentle, lapping ocean waves shifted to a deep shade of blue, rolling fiercely. Fascinated by the dramatic change of scene, I immediately told him to stop by the side of the road and whipped out my camera. Unlike the usual beach waves that I've often experienced, the wild waves crashed powerfully against the giant rocks as the sea breeze blew, spraying misty seawater everywhere. I stood in that spot for a long time, sweating under the hot sun, trying to take a good shot. Never have I seen such a stunning sight: the dark ocean water churning restlessly, along with the vivid green mountains and the clear blue sky, and you could even see other lands in the distance.
