During the pandemic, my family and I (like most families) were going through a lot. We were stuck inside with each other for over a year, and faced anxiety, stress, and boredom. In September, we decided to get a new puppy, and this puppy immediately brought joy and excitement into our lives.
This is a candid photograph taken on 35mm film of my mom playing with our puppy named Chili, weeks after we brought him into our home.

In this photograph, a plant is climbing up a wall. The plant represents resilience as it symbolizes one climbing higher and higher, over barriers (the wall), to reach their goals. In addition, this plant was able to use the wall as something to thrive on, meaning the photograph implies adaptability.

This school year has been difficult for many of us, what with having to adjust to returning to face-to-face. I composed this photo in my living room with school in mind as it’s what I feel best connect with my understanding of ‘resilience.’ We’ve had to get used to holding a pencil to paper and writing essays rather than just powering on a device and typing them. Even so, this jumble of assignments with handwriting crooked from years of having scarcely glimpsed a pencil is proof that we’ve lived and persisted through a new grade— and will continue to do so for the years to come.

Sports is a really big thing at my school. This photo was taken when the coach was telling the player what to do. An open mindset is key in sports so you can take constructive criticism from other players, teammates, and coaches on and off the field. I personally can relate to this since I have had many encounters with people giving me constructive criticism. The goal is to overcome all the thoughts in your head telling you it's negative.

This photo was taken at Long Beach during the 2021 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. The car in the picture is a Falken Tire Ford Mustang driven by Justin Pawlak. This was not the first year that Pawlak has driven at this course, and previously in 2013 he was involved in an accident during the same event. He was unable to continue the race, which can leave a driver very disheartened and unmotivated. However, he was able to come back in 2021, and ultimately took the win at the race. For him to come back years later and take the win after going though that accident, could relate greatly to the theme of 'Resilience'. This inspired me personally to never give up on a passion or dream that I have, because no matter how long it may take, if I have the determination, I can make it happen.

My good friend passed away a couple of months prior to this picture being taken. We were a group of five friends and after her passing the rest of us, after drifting apart, reconnected. It was a really difficult time for us, but being there for each other, together, made it a little bit easier. This picture was taken one day when the four of us were together and talking about our friend who passed away.

Earth is resilient. The world needs a break. Humans need to give earth a chance to heal and regenerate. Humans have increasingly damaged the environment resulting in drought and places too polluted for people to live. This photograph was taken near my house where a fire burned through our neighborhood and the mountains. Everyone had to flee the fire and many neighborhoods burned. You can see how the trees are all dead. Hopefully spring will bring new growth and healing.

The first time that I went cross country skiing in Mammoth and this was my first time trying this out. I fell down three times and then I got back up, and there were instructors skiing around us.

These past few years have been difficult for everyone. People have lost family, grown apart because of tensions and political views, had COVID damagingly affect their businesses and livelihoods, and endured many more frustrating experiences. In these times of struggle, it is hard to be optimistic, but people have lived through struggles before and if we are to learn and grow we need to show resilience. These cars represent everyone going about their own individual lives through dark and light. They may have no idea what the person in the car beside them is living through, but humanity ties us all together. We have all shown, and must continue to show, resilience.

The photograph was taken outside my house after a garbage truck had finished picking up the trash. The haphazardness of the truck driver has led to the trash can crushing the flower at the stem. But even though it was crushed by mankind's creation it still lives on, the scar of human engineering only making It stronger. Its resilience shines.

Bishop California Pabanaminia Fall Pow Wow

Resilience is being able to recover quickly through hardship and trauma. Through genocide, internment camps, forced separation of children from parents in boarding schools, Native Americans have kept their traditions and culture alive. This is the crowing of the new 2021 Tiny Tot Pow Wow Princess. The future can be bright and beautiful when we respect the earth and all beings.

The pandemic has affected a lot of people. Some people lost their jobs and others lossed loved ones. It also gave us a chance to get closer to others or find new skills. Last year, one of my friends got the chance to take a dance class. She was so excited to take the class, but unfortunately no one knew that Covid-19 would take a turn for the worse, which made all of us stay locked in for a year.
This year, when we went back to school in person, she finally got a chance to dance in person. Resilience means to recover or spring back into shape. Well, my friend is a demonstration that when things get worse, we just have to wait patiently until things get better and smile again.
